Modeling general discussion

Pulp and Paper Mill

Anyone out there modeling or have pictures inside a pulp and paper mill? The focal point of my layout is a paper mill which spans two 2x4' modules and a 3' corner module.  I'm at the stage of scratch building several shallow background buildings and trying to see how much piping and the other details should go with the various buildings. I've based my mill on photos I've acquired over the years from visiting several mills in ON and PA, as well as those posted in the yahoo papermillmodeler group.

Model Railroading with John Allen

I recently got a copy of this long out-of-print book and all I can say is Wow.

Most of you probably know who John Allen was and something about his Gorre and Daphetid Railroad. If you know how to properly pronounce the name of the railroad you most likely know know a bit more than some others. For the benefit of those who don't know how to pronounce it or have never heard of this railroad, it's pronounced:

Gory and Defeated.

Books

I was wondering if anyone has seen, the reprinted version of "HO Railroad You Can Build"? If so,is it just a

collection of the articles that appeared in MR,or does it provide more detail on,building ths "San Jaun Central"

Any info would be appreciated.I think that the SJC,would make a good 0n30 project.

 Thanks JJWalsh

My first attempt at Helicon Focus

Although not a train picture , this is my first test of my Christmas present, a new Nikon D60 and Halicon Focus program. I am still using the free version for this shot to see if it works. This image was created fro 13 seperate images to create a deapth of field of about 18". I am charging the camera battery and will test on the layout today.

First photoshop attempts

I was just muckin' about yesterday, in the post-christmas mood, and started playing with photoshop.

I know they are not the best, but it was fun! The first problem I had was with bad lighting on my layout, and trying to balance that with the photographs. The second  was with the focal point on the models.

Cheers!

Switchbacks, the vertical kind

Let me quote an excerpt from Clement C. Williams book published in 1917 entitled The Design of Railway Location,  (a former college engineering textbook): "An extreme use of the switchback principle was used in the ascent on the Crown King extension of the Santa Fe R.R. ... The total length of the line is 28 miles, and the ascent of 2436 ft. between Turkey Creek and Crown King is accomplished in a distance of 17 miles.  There are ten switchbacks with five backup sections on the line.  These sections are from 1500 to 4000 ft.

Fraud within the hobby

Went to the hobbyshop friday. Asked the owner, can you get parts? No,was the answer. They're all out! I opened the box for a Walthers Proto engine(an RS-10) and said here is the exploded view of each part with a number. Here's the phone number. No parts available. This was not the exception. This is the new marketing, with deception. Why would a manufacturer incinuate that parts are available when they don't exist ? They won't even take a back order for them because they know there will never be any.

Where's the parts?

    Fellow modelers,

Recently I tried to get parts for a P2K model. Got the run a round. Called P2k,Walthers etc. Bottom line, NO parts available. Although the mfgs. give us a detailed blowup of the model and parts numbers, it means nothing. If you break something and need a replacement, your sol.  Athearn and Atlas are very good about this but, Proto is aweful. Be forewarned.

$1000 shopping spree winner pictures

Hi all. I was the winner of the last shopping spree.

I'm a 43 year old bowling alley mechanic/automatic scoring tech. from Ontario Canada

Joe Fugate asked for some pics so here they are (if I can figure out how to post them)

My daughter April is my partner in crime with this 4x8 WGH we are setting up.

Our efforts had stalled due to a lack of funds for the structures.

The shopping spree took care of that nicely so we are again working on it.

Train books

Being new to the hobby, I was wondering if there are any books anyone can reccomend on real trains and

the terminology and history of the different locomotives and such. It would be nice to have a better understanding

of some of the terminology and history used in both model railroading and real life railroading.

Thanks

Frank
