Rio Grande Southern

Well, well, well, at last I see the Rio Grande Southern and the man behind the posts. As soon as I saw the railroad name and then the beautiful cabinetry I knew in a flash who the article was about. The moniker emblazoned on the end of the bench removed any doubt. I must say I would never have guessed 4x8 but true to form it is a very well done 4x8. Congratulations on the MRR feature Dan. Very nicely done layout. I expected no less.

Steam Sawmill

Thought some members might be interested in this steam sawmill in Oregon. Great pictures.

Inexpensive scenery construction?

I look at all the wonderful materials that are out there for creating landscape... trees, mountains, grasslands, etc.  But I look around me at stuff on the farm that could be used almost as effectively for free!

I've been experimenting with flour/water glue and wood shavings, dyed with either food color or tempera paint.  Is there anything I should be thinking about before using this kind of mixture?

GE Units running in Australia. . .

Take a look at this video from Australia.  If you didn't know any better, you would think you were watching some short line mining train running ore in the middle of the Arizona dessert.

Need a good and fast paint remover

Looking for something to use to take the paint off complete off plastic engines and cars with out to much elbow grease.

I have tried Testors ELO (easy lift off paint and decal remover) this stuff is to slow and does not work to good .

Just got done trying 90 %  isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush and after about 4 hours of scrubbing of two layers of commerical applied paint on a engine did not do such a good job either.

Winter

Do you have winter at your layout?

Show your winter pictures and how you made it.

Here's mine.

I'Ve made it on an unfinished module, H0n3. Next step will be Woodland. And I've used snow from NOCH, that stuff is easy removable!

Scratchbuilding a turntable - HO Scale

Hi all

I am going to need a small turntable for my new RR and would like to have a go at scratchbuilding it. Can anyone offer any pointers to others that have fully scratchbuilt a reliable turntable? Any good articles floating around?

I did read the article here on the turntable & roundhouse but the author used a commercial TT kit so I am hoping someone may know of a total scratchbuilt resource for TT's

Cheers

Bruce

Turning

Can somebody help a rather puzzled Englishman new to this ...

I'm trying to plan my layout .. and one of the things I want is a logging branchline .. I've visualised the loco coming down behind the logging trucks as I've heard that's what they do and then running them on to a line for the log dump .. what I'm struggling to work out is how to turn the loco round ( without a turntable) so that it can back on to the trucks to take them back up the mountain.

I'm sure there is probably a simple solution but despite lots of doodles I haven't seen it yet ..

Buying "cheap" stuff

I like reading Charlie Comstock's articles, he is always looking for a way to get a result as cheaply, frugal, cost effective as humanly possible.  I know why he does this, atleast from my prospective as I attempt these buying characteristics.  At the hobby shop we look for stuff we want and when we see it we ask, what can I do with out else where.  That of course being food, utilities, gas etc.,.

Jan NMRA mag featured NWP layout

In the Jan 2011 NMRA magazine they featured Mitch Valder’s NWP line. I was wondering if anyone here knows if he has started or finished the Pacific Lumber section of the layout. The article says Mitch really isn’t a big fan of structure building so I can understand if he hasn’t. But if he has, does anyone know of any photos of it? I would really be interested to see how he has modeled it. Hopefully I can see it this summer.
