CNC Sherline Mill

Well I finally did it. I got a Sherline CNC mill with CNC rotary table, horizontal conversion table and an 54,000rpm air motor.

Here is all the boxes that got delivered Wensday.

Put it together today. Here it is setup in it's verticle mode.

Horizontal mode "A". Great for cutting tiny gears.

Atlas Freightcar Truck Pin replacement screw option?

Dear M-R-Hers,

Collective "Brains Trust" time.

Just picked up an Atlas Extended Vision Caboose for a kitbashing project, and belatedly realised it uses press-in friction-pins to mount the trucks. (No biggie, the caboose just arrived in original sealed packaging, with one truck flopping around loose in the box).

A quick check suggests that a M2.5 screw will fit thru the existing truck hole, and can be tapped into the bolster. However, the typical M2.5 pan head is too big to fit within the Atlas truck recessed hole.

Weathering a vehicle...

Here is my first attempt at weathering a vehicle, this is a Herpa "Trucks of America"  Kenworth prime mover, coupled to CNW Trailer (Athearn).

I only wanted a very light weathering to take the plastic shine off the prime mover, but once I had done that there was no way the trailer was getting away with looking so shiny and brand new!

Sketchup trick for small items

If you've ever tried to draw something in Sketchup and wanted to use actual instead of scale dimensions, you'll know that it doesn't like really working with our small subjects.  Specifically, I've found that it doesn't allow you to draw a 1mm radius arc, or circles much smaller than that, and it will not properly extrude small objects (like HO 33" wheel treads) around a circle.  I've even had trouble making 3/8" diameter spheres.

MRH - A Video Primer on How to Modify Your Signature Line

Recently I had a fellow MRH registered user contact me directly via email and ask how to modify his signature line to include information that would automatically appear in his posts.  I produced a little (rough) video for him and thought that I would share it here.

Scale Model Animation 4 – Critter Guidance, Sensors, & Fun

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! This time I show how The Crane Critter finds its way, using a simple application of a terrific magnetic sensor that modelers of all kinds should really understand. I’ll point you to some parallels in robotics—now don’t get scared off – that might give us modelers some new ideas for our layouts, and why scale model animation is different… and the same! Maybe scale model animation taken to the limit is Micro-Robotics?

LED turnout position indicator

I needed a way to let me know the position of a hidden turnout.  This solution can't be original - it is too simple - but it does the job.

The control does not have to be a dpdt toggle - it could be from a switch machine.  I use a Tam Valley relay on  servo.

Scale Model Animation 3 – Teaching The Crane Critter How to Crawl

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! In this installment I revisit The Crane Critter.  In this installment, we begin to teach The Critter how to crawl, when, and where we need it to go!

Dullcote Brush or Spray?

I have been repainting some Box Cars in gloss enamel and applying new decals from Microscale. Plan is now to apply some Testors Dullcote to protect the Decals and remove the shine.  Having never used the product (Dullcote) before, I am seeking opinions on whether it is better to apply it by spray or brush.  I can happily use either technique.  I would also like to know if Nitrocellulose Laquer thinners are suitable to use with Dullcote.

Thanks for your help

Peter
