Central Vermont 7917. Converting an Atlas S2 to DCC w/sound

Work has finally begun on converting a stock, undecorated Atlas S2 to represent the Central Vermont's #7917 circa 1956.

I chose this loco and this year as it had some very unique visual features including a long toolbox forward of the cab, and triangle shaped number boards.

To prepare for this project, I had opened another topic that proved to supply some additional historical data, and some great ideas on the parts to be used. I won't duplicate that post, but you can see it here.

Re-did the Paint on the Mountians or in

Re-did the Paint on the Mountians or in the progress the of changing the colors I realized I was on the wrong track so hopefully these are closer to what I should be doing. It's only been 25 years since I painted a Picture of any size.

still not finished but headed in a better direction.

Paint My first 12 feet of Back drop Color Mountains

I'm No where near done yet!! Here are some photos of the first 12 feet of of my backdrop painting. I have never painted any kind of mural in my life and it's fun but not as easy as they make it look. I have about 5 books on painting Model Railroad Back drops but, just because we buy the books doesn't make us Rembrandt. The mountain on the far left just has to be changed I'm not sure why it came out looking the way it does but the rest in in the early stages and the lower half on the right does seem to be doing OK.

Painting an Sketching Back Drop of the Rocky Mountians

I've Sketched using white pencil Hope you can see it, also the blurry lines are where I erased earlier attempts. also the 2 photos shown were the only 2 of 6 that would show up on camera the white lines I used for sketching the backdrop.

Workin' on the layout

One of my summer project while the layout is down is to replace all the Eugene staging ladder turnouts with jig-built turnouts. The current staging ladder is all commercial turnouts and we get more derailments on that ladder than I would like to see. The solution is to replace the commercial turnouts with jig-built turnouts ala Fast Tracks or Proto:87 Stores turnout kits using Central Valley ties.

New Year, New Layout Update #12 - cleaning up the odds and ends

A couple of weeks ago, I sent Coxy a note asking for a new post on his blog.  He's weathering rolling stock right and left, and I was really liking his flickr pics.  Being the gentlemen he is, he tagged me, and asked for an update.  So here it is.

How to construct code 83 #4 Dual Guage turnouts

I am in the process of reconstructing my desert mining RR which ran from Keeler CA/Cero Gordo Mines to Owenyo CA. where there was long transfer trestle and a short loading dock to move freight and ore from the Narrow Guage (Carson & Colorado to the Southern Pacific standard guage. I need the #4 Dual Guage turnouts to make the whole thing work.

Respectfully and with HOPE

Another project in the wings. This is an old Display Craft wood craftsman kit. I've assembled the main body & metal detail parts for the most part. The wood body has been coated with two layers of Minwax sanding sealer to conceal the wood grain.

Layout 1: The First Apartment Layout

The First Apartment Layout

The First layout started so simple I could have laughed if I saw what it would become.

The original plan started as a 2’x4’ shelf module with three tracks at a base level, two tracks at a higher level, and then two more tracks on a third level.  Naturally, I then decided I wanted to connect the three levels together!!  Thus, I built the benchwork over my bed, a large 4’x7’, and then imagined up a mammoth of plans, by all means.
