Questions for Ring Engineering

Hi guys,

I am a newby who has yet to make any control investment.

Ring seems to have the most innovative control system currently on the market.  This is an exciting product!

I’ve read their web site, viewed their videos, listened to Ring’s MRH podcast, and read most of the posts to this and other sites.  I need to know more, though, and thought maybe there are others that have questions.

Here are some that I have:

Wrisely Papers

To All: Wrisely Papers is a newly built custom kit that Dave Capron  recently completed for

          his Great Lakes Northern layout.

What does a beginner want?

The $500 layout discussion and upcoming contest have me thinking - what is it that a beginner in our hobby wants?  The simplest answer I can come up with is "everything," which is the probably the reason so many are disappointed with their first layout.  With that in mind, is it even possible to satisfy somebody who doesn't really know what they want or like yet?

My guess is that a beginner will come from one of two directions:

Making dents in freight cars

I know this most likely been here before but, what methods are being currently used to simulate dents in gondolas, hoppers, box cars, etc?

Many thanks

Larry

Track and roadbed

I am new to this and I am going to build an old west style layout and using HO scale.

What is the best track to use for this?

What is the best roadbed to use?

DCC Commentary

To All: I just got back from the layout. Set some railroad and street signs. Also ran a few

diesel locomotives. I have about 48 diesels that are DCC equipped. With 20 rail-

roads in my chosen era in E. St.Louis, it takes a lot of them! Fortunately I already

had most of the roads needed in DC locos. Being Atlas and Kato, they are easy

RGS and D&RG - Durango roundhouse brick walls available

I was catching up on the Scotty Mason podcast, and learned that Monster Modelworks is going to run just the walls for the Durango roundhouse.

Jimmy at Monster has created a method to cut AMAZING 3d brick walls from wood, on a laser.  The Durango walls aren't up on his site yet (as of last night), but this should be a boon to RGS and D&RG fans.

I've also added the walls to my listing of structures and available models for the RGS (listed by town), here:

My New Layout

Just wanted to share my new layout I am working on. I just came across this site a few days ago and the info here is great! I'm starting a new layout that will eventually be a 16x2 N scale covering a large area from Nebraska to Colorado in the mid-60's. It's obviously much compressed for the amount of variation in scenery - but I wanted to get a chance to try a variety of techniques and styles to learn as much as I can with the hope of someday building a larger layout. I started with a 2x4 section that transitions from rural western Nebraska to eastern Colorado.

Industry Update from CMT

Hello Alan

I would like to give you an update on the state of the model train industry.

Industry Update

The hobby is in a manufacturing turmoil, due to a lack of production capacity now.

There is no question; you have seen the delays from virtually all manufacturers. Pick any manufacturer’s name and their products are delayed. Why you ask? There are several reasons.

national train show and ???? about cog wheels for class one locomotives in N scale

trainshow Good afternoon Fellow Board Members,

Are any of you going to the national train show in

Grand Rapids, Michigan? I have heard a lot of minuses

from folks that wanted to set up and be vendors there BUT

I am asking as a visitor interested in the N Gauge suppliers

and vendors .It would be a considerable expense for me to travel there

with two days lodging as I would be traveling by Amtrak from Syracuse, New York
