Car Cards and Waybills

Hi All,

In keeping up with the recent article on Waybills lI have posted what I use as a  very simplified Car Card Waybill system that can be used on any layout. It is loosely based on the one introduced by Malcolm Furlow many years ago. Check it out on You Tube: http://youtu.be/gN_gTiJ8-VA  More to come!

Op Session before Prototype Rails at Cocoa Beach, Jan 5 2012

This is a short video of a little of the action on Tom Wilson's P&WV and John Wilkes L&N. I was dispatcher so I only caught a little of the action out on the layout but was I ever busy writing track warrants. Hope you enjoy.

Pick-ups/drop-offs inside structures

I got to thinking about spots inside industries and how to tell when we've suitably coupled onto a car - without damaging the car or coupler or knocking the back wall of the industry into the side wall of the adjacent industry.  Thinking about something is good.  Not coming up with a solution is not so good.....

Help Switchlist Database Design

I need to create a simple relational database to keep track of what cars are in what tracks and in what sequence. I'm having trouble with the tables and relationships to accomplish this task.

An example end result will be a track list which can be marked up to perform switching tasks:

TRACK 1602 - INDUSTRIAL LEAD EAST TO WEST
SEQ CAR_NUMBER CAR_KIND L/E
1 ARMN 715251 REEFER L
2 BNSF 185321 REEFER L
3 ARMN 755285 REEFER L
4 ARMN 755219 REEFER L

Video of operations at Deer Hollow in the alcove addition

O.K. - try not to laugh, but if you've got around 12 minutes with nothing else to do please check out my video of my very first operation "mini-session" in my alcove area.  The actual session took about 20 minutes but I edited it down to about 12 minutes to hopefully reduce the "snore factor".  The video is kind of a "quickie" but you can get the idea.  As usual, your comments, suggestions, and remarks are appreciated.  Thanks for watching!!!

Wilmington & Northern Branch: Switchlist

Mike Rose posted a switchlist generator over on the Operations Forum and I modified it for the W&N to explore additional capabilities.

Here's a link to my version.

I will continue to use car cards but this is an alternative.

Should 'B' end be consistent?

The end of the box car with the brake wheel is generally referred to as the 'B' end. Is this because it is where the brake wheel is located or is it just the back end? On the prototype, are the cars placed in the consist uniformly so that all cars have the brake wheel towards the 'back end' of the train? I can see this being done so the brakemen knew right away which end of the box car to run to if they needed to quickly apply brakes.
