Model Railroading and Lego blocks

In recent months I've run across several articles on using Lego blocks in making buildings from kits and scratch building them as well. Has anyone her actually used them? I would think they would come in handy in joining parts or keep walls straight when there is nothing else to support them. I've even come across an article which describes how cut up Lego blocks can be used in N-Scale Magazine.

So if you used them let me know> Even if you haven't there are probably some opinions that need to be aired so use this opportunity.

Old style drive-in restaurant by motel on mountain

As a boy I used to frequent drive-in restaurants - some with car hops, but most without.  I figured that the motel needed someplace for it's customers to eat, so I'm building the Blair Line(tm) #182 "Dari-King drive-in.  It will be viewed from 3 feet away, thus the less than stellar construction.  It is still under construction with a bunch more to do, but is presentable at present.

August 31, 2011 and it's back to work

Back to work day at CSI. It should been Monday but because of Irene all classes were cancelled since the buses in Staten Island (never mind the trains but this is Staten Island Rapid Transit) weren't ready to start rolling because of road flooding and downed trees and power lines.

Alcove Expansion - Mural progress as of 8-28-11

Artist Linda continues her work on the mural in the alcove area and according to her she has completed about 90% of the mural.  She has yet to paint in the town area and some near detail.  I've got to say that I'm very impressed with her work, but quality and quantity as I believe that this project turned out to be bigger than she had imagined!  One of the benefits is getting to know Linda as she's a wonderful person!   I hope to be able to get her some additional work when others see the beautiful job.

Scratch Building a Wellman Coke Pusher

I have been working on a project the last couple of months. I am scratch building a Coke Pusher. Coke Pushers are used in the Coke Plants. The Coke Pushers are made by different manufactures and different styles depending on the coke battery and the coke plant company specifications. I purchased plans from

Foamboard "stand-in" structure, or "What to do when time's running short!"

First the disclaimers:

1.) The pictures are a poor quality - poor lighting, out of focus, etc..

2.) The construction is shoddy.

3.) This is NOT a contest model, but only to help visitors visualize what will be.

Video of lake on alcove mural

O.K. - you guys are probably getting tired of hearing about the alcove, but I wanted to show the lake that the artist is painting so I made a "quickie" video:

Video - Checking track clearance & turnout replacement

I'm working on the rock cut inside radius and needed to see how much clearance I had between the track and the foam "wall" that will have the hand carved plaster rocks.  I didn't want to do all of the work only to find out that it was too tight!   The foam wall piece is removable, so I'll do my plaster rock work at the bench before returning the unit to be installed permently.
