Scenery - Structures

My first module - Ballasting

After the successful Big Boy test I was satisfied that I didn't need to make any track alignment changes so I went ahead and ballasted the track.

I used Arizona Rock & Mineral Co.'s Northern Pacific Med Gray Granite as the base ballast then added a lesser amount of their Southern Pacific Black Cinder mostly along the rails with a scattering to the sides in a few places.

My first module - The BIG test

So having completed the wiring of the module it was time for the Big Boy test.

I hooked up my Roco Z21 system, whipped out my iPhone, added a new loco and voila...it worked perfectly!

Even my 22" curve was ok.

Next I tried out the Intermountain BNSF ES44AC.

My first module - Wiring

It's been quite a while since my last post, so I have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Very soon after gluing the track down my little helper and I tested it out with a recent purchase.

Then I carefully flipped the module up onto it's side and proceeded to start my first ever wiring.

Here is how it looks.

First building...almost done.

Been wanting to try Lance Mindheims photo laminating process and figured this was a good place to start. First structure in the layout. Still needs a bit of tweaking and some additional details. The walls are brick jpgs printed to scale. The big doors are paper. The roof is printed tarpaper. The glass door is from Lances website. The door was cutout first and glued on. Then black construction paper was cut around it. Then the window section was placed on top of that and then the brick on that.

Working on the Railroad, Again.....update on the truss bridge

Well, I finally got around to finishing the bashed truss bridge so I thought I'd post photos of it before I store it away until the time comes to build the module it fits into.

A visit with Boone Morrison

My first office in Hilo (Hawaii) was on the second floor of a 1950's building with a restaurant below. Adjacent is a building that, at the time, was vacant and in need of repair but had been the headquarters of a large sugar plantation (and controlling interest in the long gone Hawaii Consolodated Railway).

Reworking an old section

I started scenic works on the westend section of Elizabeth Oaks nearly 3 years ago. I handled this section always as a test environment for some basic skills and techniques like weathering and ballasting the track.
While scenic work proceeded eastbound I felt more uncomfortable with the first section.
So I stepped up the plate and reworked the section throughout.
