Locos and rolling stock
Sci-Fi Locomotive Kitbash
I've completed my first locomotive kitbash of a science fiction fantasy engine meant to be used on my Mines of Xenon layout in HO scale. The base unit started out with an E60 shell and was chopped down to fit on an Atlas SD45 chassis. Bits and pieces were added to protect the humans from the mining robots rising up in revolution.
PSC 3 Truck Brass Shay - Drive help and Pianting Stainless Boiler?
Some time ago i picked up a Precision Scale Ho 3 truck Shay for a very very good price. At the time i supected it wasn't running. After significant testing I had narrowed down some issues to a bind in the last spur gear and also dry gears. After a clean and lube it appears to have improved.
D& RGW K-27 #460 finished
Westside models K-27 #460 in HOn3 dismantled in preparation for painting. These engines are like Swiss watches in their build quality. A pure joy to work with. I have prepared it for LED lights in both the front and rear headlights. It will get a Soundtraxx DCC sound decoder with a sugar cube speaker. The D&RGW #460 is a very odd engine. It was never modernized to piston valves, neither did it get a shortened smokebox. The version I'm painting will represent how it looked in the mid -30's. It will now get a bath in some acetone before being sandblasted.
Poor decaling
I'm having difficulty applying decals without distorting them when I have to position them.
I do what the directions say, as in appling it to a prewetted model, but always distort the decal when trying to adjust its position.
Sound bug question
Okay, so, my Proto 2000 S1 has a Digitrax DN146IP (N scale, though it's an HO engine) because there is just no room inside the engine for an HO decoder, let alone an HO sound decoder.
My question is, is there an N scale sound bug compatible with it?
I can't seem to find one on the Digitrax site (and the only sound bug they have there is too big)
I would really like sound with this engine, but dang, there is no room!
How to open boxcar 2 add weight?
Hey guys
I want to add some weight to this intermountain boxcar but don’t know if it’s possible to open without breaking. I have a few cars I want to add weights to but I’m scared im going to break them trying to pull them apart and figured I’ll have to use my dremel tool to cut a hole in the bottom.
Is there a common way to pry them open or do I have to jerry rig them??
thanks
My brass K-27 in HOn3 is finally finished.
My brass Sunset models K-27 is finished. This has been a long road.... First I had to sort out the power pickups, and added phosphor bronze wipers. Then I replaced the worm with a new one from NWSL. The next was installation of a Econami decoder with stay alive and dual speakers. The worst problem was that the drive wheels were out of gauge (and so was the tender wheels...). I corrected that, and finally I could paint it! I used Scalecote 1 engine black and baked it in the oven. Then I painted the details with water based paint and a brush.
Plastic Pellet covered hopper options (HO, late 1960s)
Hi all,
I have been doing some reading for rolling stock associated with a plastics factory i am planning/considering for my layout.
From what i have seen Bachmann does offer an ACF centerflow 4-bay covered hopper with the round roof hatches suitable for plastic pellets.
My question is if this car is a reasonable base for a late 1960s (1968 to 1970) covered hopper hauling plastic pellets to a plastics (molding) factory.

Read a lot of gear breakage on the 44 and 70 ton switchers. Any repairs /suggestions for a simple fix?
Details Associates EMD cab windows (3306) will fit in....
I bet 20 years ago this question would be easily answered by any random person at the LHS, Now that not so many detail, it is less easy. The Details Associate Part 3306 Extra Cab Windows (EMD)
Will this part fit into a stock Athearn (narrow hood) EMD cab window? And will it fit flush?
Or, if not, what is it for?
And, if not, is there an easy way, possibly with a resin, or a product to buy, to fill the Athearn cab windows to make them look better without putting a cannon cab on?
