Scenery and structures

Scenery Construction and detailing

A question of how you construct scenes on your layouts. At my age, 73, stranding for long periods is a pain, in many places. Pardon the pun. Even when I was younger and physically (reasonably) fit, I built structures and in fact whole scenes, including track, on a base while sitting at a bench, table or other comfortable place.

Coloring and Weathering Wood Loads for Sawmill

Anyone have any tips or recommendations for painting resin or plastic wood loads so that the wood actually looks like lumber? I'm building an N scale saw mill and need lots of lumber in various size stacks. While I have created molds of the lumber stacks, I can't seem to find the correct color. Started with a base layer of tan, and then added some white wash to areas.  But as I look at photos, it seems like some deeper reds and oranges are needed to get the variability within lumber loads.

Walthers HO Sand Tower track centers?

Does anyone have the track centers for the Walthers HO scale sand tower kit? None are given on the kit and I'd like to get some additional track planning done. Thanks.

Tuxedo Dave's Formal Wear & Chainsaw Sharpening

Here's the latest Davetown diorama. I'll put a slide show of the entire build together in a day or two.

Ouch or how to recover from an oops

So, I have been working on a church structure for some time now.  The whole structure is cast from a  plaster material in small sections and assembled, including the spire.  So, I have been trying to decide on 1 of 2 options for the top of the spire.  1. was to just let it come to a point and roof tile all the way up.  2. was to lop off a small section and put a cross up there.

Timing of photo backdrop placement

I've been reading many articles and I'm a bit confused as to when I should put in the photo backdrop I'm planning. It seems it needs to go in earlier as I don't see trying to weasel it around behind landforms, buildings, trees, etc. especially with adhesive on the back. It certainly seems you should get the material you're using for a backdrop in (styrene, Masonite, etc.) And then painted if you're not using a full height photo (some only use the landform portion and cut out the sky.)

Water standpipes

Does anyone know where I can get HO standpipes for my yard? Nothing shows in Walthers and same goes for MRH search. Google gave me pictures and not much more. I would like to get 2 or 3 at a reasonable price. My yard will have an off site water tank to supply the standpipes. DM&IR in Two Harbors, MN for example. RR owned it but it sat next to a city street and was piped into the yards.

Anyone have experience with "Grand Central Gems" bridge components?

I was going to scratch build   a trestle I need for my layout but while shopping for other items I came across  bridge components from a company called "Grand Central Gems" They have assorted heights of trestle bents, both single and double  and a trestle deck with backheads.  The deck looks as if you would only have to add rails and not conventional bridge track.  Anyway, wondering if anyone out there has experience with this company?

RIB priming

I just received my first item from Inter-Action Enterprises and need to know if anyone has successfully primed the Resin-Impregnated Board they use. Will it be non-porous enough to create a smooth surface (the kit is the houseboat kit) with spray primers? Will it work with acrylic gesso primer? The instructions mention Krylon, but there is none here, apart from the rust protection products at Repco.

What to use for HO "sand"? preferably a common item....

Been working on my Walthers HO sand house and  I've been contemplating what to fill the sand bin with to represent HO scale sand.  Of course, real sand comes to mind but I don't know how well it scales down.
