Tam Valley DCC booster?

I've noticed the add here for Tam Valley's 5A DCC booster.  $42 sounds like a heck of a deal, but I'd like to hear the opinion of some others out there before jumping in.  Assuming that I provide a power supply, is that all I would need to run my layout (using a Zephyr as a command station and possibly yard booster)?  Has anybody used this booster, and can provide an opinion on quality, function, value, etc?

Here's the link, in case the Tam Valley ad isn't up at the moment:

Power booster question for DCC

I have built 4x8 layouts in the past and am now building my dream double deck with staging (3 level) layout in an 11x16 ft room.  My mainline will be close to 200 ft for a train to circle all three levels.  I am purchasing an NCE PH-PRO and plan on running up to 4 trains simultaneously.  If I wire the bus with 12 gauge and twist every three ft, I shouldn't need a power booster, correct?

Thanks,

Todd

Control Panel(s) or Distributed Switch Controls?

I'm building a shelf-type urban industrial module (three  8' x 2' tables in an 18' x 8' L-shaped layout) and was wondering about how many control panels to place and where, or whether to use the fascia as one giant control panel, placing the switch toggles in front of the actual switch locations.

switch machine contacts

Hi all; I have several twin coil switch machines with extra contacts for lights or signals . I can not for the life of me figure out how to use them to power a lamp on my control panel. I would like to have a light lit for the straight route when I push that button, and one for the alternate route when I push that button. I finally figured out how to wire the machines to throw the switches but can't figure out the extra contacts. I am probably the dumbest person on electrical wiring in the hobby,so a few pictures or diagrams would be heaven sent.

Caboose animation

This fellow has some nice projects. I do not know if he ever post anything here.

DCC feature request

The question was recently asked, "What would you like to see made available in DCC?"

Well, here's my list.  Some things exist, some don't, but this is what I want

CVT Ties

I've made up my mind that I'll be using the Central Valley Tie kits available from Proto:87 for my switches.  However in doing my research and running the numbers in my head real quick it seems cheaper to buy the CVT ties and ME rail vs ME flex.

Wiring question

I have what is essentially a single track mainline with reverse loops at each end. The loop at one end is a long dogbone in which the two tracks run parallel for some distance to give the impression of a double track mainline. I assume I follow the directions for wiring reverse loops for this section but are there any issues with having a long loop section? Also, how does the wiring change if I add crossovers where the tracks run parallel? I am wiring for dcc.

Bachmann ON30 circuit board

Hi all,

Looking for some thoughts re: poor running of a Bachmann On30 2-8-0. I purchased a new Consolidation off eBay last week. It looks great but it ran poorly from the off so I cleaned the wheels, axles, track, swapped out the Bachmann decoder for a brand new NCE one. This is non-sound.

thoughts on on-board sound

I don't want to hi-jack this thread, but it would help me a lot to hear from others about their experience with on board sound.   I know that likes and dislikes are very subjective, but I  really don't want to spend the extra money now to get steam engine sounds that I won't like.
