Track and electrical/DCC

First time decoder install

I am installing a Tsunami in a Steam Loco, in the tender. This is my first and I am wondering about dressing the wires from the engine to the tender. The loco already has a two pin plug from engine to tender for power pickup an routing. But I have four other wires which must go from the tender to the loco. I don't want the colors showing and I am wondering what other folks do about this. Any advice?

Electronic uncoupler with delay circuit

Anyone else tried this idea? I liked what was printed in the recent magazine but the electrical diagram left a lot to be desired. Especially when looking at the photo of the test track wiring. A good picture of the underside of this circuit would have been worth the price of that issue alone. I would like to build a few of these, but am a little confused by the wiring schematic as it concerns the Kadee electromagnet uncoupler.

Thanks,

Thomas G

DIY Switch Machines?

Has anyone ever attempted to build their own motorized slow motion switch machine?

I am a low-budget N scale modeler who would like to build my own if I can.

I can't afford the amount of Tortoise switch machines I would need, but I would like a solution I can use with my DCC system.

Thanks,  Andrew

JMRI error 306

I'm trying to program decoders using JMRI and Sprog II and have done successfully in the past 5 days.  Turned computer back on with nothing else changed and I keep getting an error 306 - timeout talking to the command station.  I put back locomotives successfully programmed last week and continue to get the same error on the programming track.  I've tried connecting directly to the wires coming out of Sprog II with not success.  Port assignment has not changed and the computer does identify Sprog II as using that port.  I tried restarting the computer and

Powering Kato Turnouts

Hello All

I have recently purchased a kit of HO Kato Unitrack (Black River Junction) and a NCE Power Cab to start my first layout.

I would appreciate some advice on how best to power the turnouts.  I am considering purchasing NCE Switch-Kat accessory decoders but I will need at least 11 of them as one is needed for each turnout (except for the crossover where I can use one decoder for 2 switches) and the cost is rather high.

Any suggestions that would be more economical?

Thanks

Mike

Just realized issue with typical HO track spacing and NMRA Standard, how does one reconcile them?

For the longest time that I can remember, a 2" spacing between tracks, even on curves, was a typical "standard" spacing between two tracks that are side by side.  But as I just happen to look at the NMRA Track standards (both S-7 and S-8) as updated in 2008 for the "Classic" gauge (which is appropriate for modeling 1953 equipment)  the spacing should be 2 1/16"?  For several reasons I would like to keep the spacing 2" (especially for the curves since I like to make the templates using rounded numbers (i.e.

Railpro System

I am at current  a digitrax user and came across the railpro system.  I am wondering does anyone else have this system and what you think of it and experiences with it.  I am going to be buying one, so I just wanted to hear some feed back

Using CVT Turnout Kits for Curved Turnouts

I've read the article about using the CVT turnout kits as a poor man's assembly jig.  I already have the FastTrack filing jigs so filing point rails, frogs etc wont be a problem.  I need to build a true curved turnout, i.e.

Prodigy question

DCC Question:  I think it's time for a power booster.  My Prodigy Squared doesn't seem to have enough juice to trip the auto reverse loops when I have more than 4 or 5 locos running.  Looking at the booster options, there is 3.5 and 8amp, but the 3.5 is a "district booster".  I don't really want to create districts.  Is it possible to plug both the base unit and the booster to the main power feeds?  Would I get 7 amp if I combine the 3.5 boo

Athearn RTR RS2 problems

Ok, I have started using Ox-Guard on my layout.  My Proto 2000 GP9s run very well, like they do when the track is fresh from cleaning.  I'm sure there is a coating of Ox-Guard on the wheels.
