Benchwork and roadbed

More Questions on Hardboard Splines

I've been absorbing all the information posted about spline roadbed these past months as I plan on giving it a try on my new layout.  I had initially planned to use Masonite hardboard (and am still leaning that direction), but I've got a couple questions regarding using this material.

I have a table saw to cut the splines.  Is there any particular blade that seems to do best for ripping them from 4'x8' panels?

Splines, Cookie Cutter or Plywood

Hi

I am a newbie from New Zealand and currently constructing bench work.  To date I have the bench work made from a grid of 3 x 1 at 12" centers. I am now pondering the roadbed ( I plan various elevations of track work) and looking at the options of:

1. Splines,

2. Laying a sheet of 1/2" ply and then cookie cutting the roadbed, or

3. Laying 1/2" ply and building up the roadbed using extruded foam.

double deck module, is it feasiable?

Just as the title states, is it feasiable to build a double deck module?

I'm in the process of building a modular/sectional N scale layout for my garage. I need the layout in this style so that it can be moved, taken down for storage, etc. But I began to thinking, could I do a double deck to get me more room/trackage.

So has anyone ever done/thoght about doing one in this fashon? Can it be done?

Good/bad idea?

Please share your thoughts.

Walk Through Lift Gate

I am interested in finding a good plan on how to make a simple walk through lift gate for operators to easily pass between the inside and outside of a layout.

Double Deck Spacing

For those of you who have double or triple deck layouts, what is the suggested spacing between decks.  I am still considering adding a top deck to my HO scale layout, but I still need to do more research!

And for those of you who have built multi deck layouts, I would love to here your comments and tips that you discovered along the way.  Any advice would be most helpful!

Moveable L-girder advice

Hi all,

I'm hoping to build a 10'6" x 3'9" (max) dog-bone N-scale "rail-fanning" layout - maximum mountain scenery and limited track with probably only five turnouts on the whole layout. A high scenic divide (probably hardboard), will run about 8' down the center of the layout giving me two viewing sides.

My space is limited. When not in use, the layout needs to be pushed against a wall but to enable me to access both sides I need to be able to pull it away out into the room.

Progress on my Helix

I'm building a rather large O Scale helix as part of my layout's construction.

Turnouts on Gradients

Hi,

Can someone please explain why turnouts should not be install at an angle with the gradient? Do they always have to be level?

My proposed layout has a 1.8% gradient on the left hand side from the sweep around the back of the Engine House up past the platform and on to the cross-over bridge at top. There are five turnouts in this section. If it were feasible to include the turnouts in-line with the gradient I could reduce that climb to about 1%.
