Benchwork and roadbed

tangent off the radius

Nscale helix minimum radius, maximum slope

I am building a new nscale layout, and am considering a helix for staging, or maybe even a second level. I am wondering what many would consider the minimum radius and slope for a helix to join 2 levels perhaps 8"-12" apart. I don't mind if trains are between for a while....it will increase run time.

how to install switch machine in 2"-3" foam

Hi,

My bechwork is ready and i'm starting to model the first section of my layout, the port section...i need to elevate that section 2" to 3" high using foam. My worries now are the tortoise switch i wil be using to drive my turnouts. I've read that 1" is the recomended so how can i install them this high?

Any advice?

Will it Warp?

Will this support plan wind up warping later?

I'm in a climate controlled basement. Temps do vary by 10 degrees or so summer to winter but humidity level is relatively constant. Plywood deck is 3/4 inch birch cabinet grade. I had to modify my support structure so I now have the upper deck here supported on the sides of 1x2 strips ripped from plywood. I needed the extra height for the deck, and I new with a 24 inch wide section that the upper deck needed some lateral support under it or it would sag.

(Not) Ballasting

Since I'm not a fan of ballasting, on my last layout I sanded down cork roadbed to a more proto profile and left it unballasted.  There was enough color variation among the little bits in the cork that it looked ok to me.

I've started a new shelf switcher and don't want to bother with sanding cork again, so I'll probably use thin cork sheet (roll) for roadbed.  The color of the sheet is not as realistic looking to me as the cork roadbed though.

Tapering the Roadbed

I'm planning to use 1/4" thick Homasote roadbed on the mainline of my layout, and with track down at the base (tabletop) level for the sidings, yards, etc.  The roadbed I've used thus far is the Homabed product produced by California Roadbed Company.  I really like the product, but have decided not to order any more due to the incredibly bad communication skills of the owner.  So I'm going to try manufacturing my own using Craig Bisgeier's method.

Risers on grade

When cutting risers for track on a grade do you attempt to match the slope by cutting the top of the riser at an angle?

Will leaving the riser tops square introduce a significant fluctuation in a 2  to 2.5% grade in N scale with 3/4 inch plywood subroadbed?

Previous grades have all used foam risers.

Thanks,

track noise

I am about to start my layout that I have been dreaming about for 50 years!  I have built several modules in the past and helped with a couple of club layouts.  My question is about how to keep the track noise down so sound systems can be heard.  I saw an article in the January Model Railroader about using Dynamat (auto sound deadener) under cork road bed.  Has anyone tried this other than the author?  What would you suggest?  Homasote is not a commonly available product in the Denver area.

Thanks

Light valances and heat, anyone had issues?

I'm getting ready to be install valances on the new chainsaw and I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with heat and enclosed valances.   I'm using 48" twin full spectrum florescent lights and the valance will be 3" deep.  I want to use heavy rosin paper above the lights painted white to reflect the light back down and to keep the valance light  (and cheap since I have it already).

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues and if so what did you do about it.

Reliability: Swing gate vs Dropdown vs Liftout

I am looking for your experiences in utilizing the different methods and wondering which style  have you found to be the most reliable.

Which style seems to work best?

Which one requires the least maintenance for trouble free operation?

I have seen ALL of the blog postings on what people have built, their problems and solutions, but am asking those who have used more than one if not all three about  their experiences with them.

Thanks for your input

Randy
