layout

Hello all, I am from France and would like to build my first layout with US trains (so big, coloured and beautifull).

Do you have any suggestion to make a nice layout as dogbone shape (approx lenght in Cm 585cm, I do confuse with inches and feet system!) My width will be 70 cm  and approx 1square meter on each edge.

thanks for your help.

Track Plans

If you haven't already, check out the other magazine's track plan database. There you can see what others are doing in the same space you have available.

When I was a kid... no wait, I still do that. HO, 28x32, double deck, 1969, RailPro

Drawing, please.

Can you post a drawing of the entire space you have to work with?

(The room in which the layout will go).

Include dimensions (in cm or inches) and any obstructions such as doors, windows, pipes, desks, etc.

That way we can help you design the best layout for the space.

Going by your measurements, I think you have a 19-foot (585cm) long shelf, 27.5 inches (70cm) wide, with 39 inch by 39 inch (1 square meter)  squares at both ends?

A drawing would help a lot.

Other info that will help us help you:

What scale? (N, HO, Z, other?)

What kind of trains do you want to run?  Diesel?  Steam?  Modern?  1950s?

Any specific location you want to model?

Any specific industries you want your railroad to served?  Lumber, coal, canning, cows, ?????

Welcome to the forum, and we're looking forward to hearing more about your new layout.

My scale will be HO, diesel

My scale will be HO, diesel loc (union pacific mainly and santa fe).

No specific industry (yard and loc depôt will have my favourite choice.)

drawing: I try to put my drawing attached but don't succeed.

layout will be place alonside a wall so no doors or windows will interupt space.

general form will be a U as you described in your answer. (I can't join the drawing with my topic).

You need to upload your

You need to upload your pictures to an online photo album (Like Photobucket or Google Photo) and then paste the URL into the "Image" loader (in the toolbar above the text box).

In HO, 1 square meter for return loops limits the radius to 18", which means smaller 4-axle diesels and shorter cars (like 40' boxcars).

Urban (city)?  Rural (countryside)?

SteinJr has some great 2'x8' switching layouts which you could combine, join or incorporate into your shelf.

19' minus the two 39" ends equals about 12' (365cm) of straight shelf section to work with.  More if you consider the space inside of the turnback loops.

What kind of doodles (drafts / sketches) have you done for your space?

Or are there any layouts you've seen that has elements / aspects you like?

I will consider rural but

I will consider rural but with a yard or Locs depot.

I can also play point to point without any loops. Wath do you think?

I tried again for pics but sorry (maybe I 'm stupid!) but i can't download it!

Image upload help

There is an image/photo upload tutorial blog written by our illustrious Jeff Shultz at this link:

http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/621

Which should help you with the problem of uploading. Note that MRH does provide some storage capability for your images on the MRH web site - PhotoBucket or the likes is not required (and IMHO, PhotoBucket and the likes actually slows the performance in presenting the matter to the reader - especially with more that one to three images).

I hope this will be helpful to you.
