Download demo sample issue!

Pick one of the following download options (option 1 recommended):

Download option 1: Download 10-page sample issue (zip file, 5.75 MB)

... or ...

Download option 2: Download 10-page sample issue (pdf file, 6.55 MB)

Some notes about the Demo Sample issue:

  • When you first open the magazine PDF file, it will ask if you want the document to go full screen - say yes to get the best reading experience.
  • Ads will not play by themselves, so as to not be too annoying. If you want an ad to play, click on it. (We'll add a little icon in the real magazine to indicate when an ad is "playable").
  • When you first click on an ad or other playable media, Adobe Reader may ask you if you trust this media and will allow it to play - say yes to have the media play.
  • The NCE PowerCab mock advertisement includes a 3D virtual reality image that you can spin with the mouse. Click on it and say yes that you trust this media to play.
  • Most of the content in this demo issue is material about or from Charlie Comstock. Charlie's local to the MRH offices, so it was very easy to work with him to get some finished material to show. We like Charlie, but never fear - we will be covering many other topics!
  • Remember, you MUST download and install Adobe Reader 9. The interactive content in this issue will not work properly on any earlier version!

This is a very embryonic version of the eventual full January 2009 issue. Much of the eventual features, like mute audio for the entire magazine, are missing right now.

As a brand new rich media magazine using the latest-and-greatest technology, I'm expecting there will be some people who have problems viewing the issue. Just let us know what your problem is and we'll see if we can resolve it.

Please use this comments area to post what you think of the sample demo.

problem with magazine

Ok Joe, I had to update Adobe, that's fine, needed to anyway.

However the NCE Powercab ad on page 10 won't work, error message says that the Powercab.mov file cannot be played, file is not present.

Everything else works like a charm, I LOVE IT!!!

Oops!

Dale:

You missed the external .mov file. In the future we should embed that file into the PDF, but for now, here's a link to download the missing file. Just download it and drop it into the same folder as the magazine and life should be good!

Glad you're liking the sample ... this is how a PDF should be done for online reading.

Darned Adobe

Firefox III users (Other versions, I don't know)

Firefox III is going to have a snit when you install the version of Adobe Reader (9) required by MRH.  The Adobe site tells you about the snit, but the notice is buried by the popup that causes the snit!

If you work your way through the screens you'll get it done.  Adobe 9 seems fine and cleaned up the earlier version.  It allows for the media bells and whistles of the mag.  BUT (again that "but") the install drops adobe spam on your desktop in the disguise of a link to a special browser that brings up an Adobe sell site.  (Icon says "Acrobat.com")

Blame Adobe, not MRH.  The format is a good one for the mag.

One suggestion; don't automax the page.  I have a 22" wide format monitor and the mag doesn't look it's best maxed.  And too big to read comfortably.  A standard 3/4 monitor may be different.

Adobe - FF3 compatability issues

If you change the FF3 options for opening PDFs then you can avoid this problem. Tools>Options>Applications, scroll to Adobe Acrobat x.x document, Right mouse and then change the handling option.

Personally I hate Acrobat as it is a memory hog and get FF to open the document externally in Foxit reader.

If you prefer to use Acrobat then you can get FF to open it externally rather than internally.  Avoids compatibility issues that way.

FF3

I'm starting to dislike FF3, I've crashed it more times then I crashed FF2 when it came out. IN fact its crashed twice here...

Hopefully they can work some more bugs out, or I might be using Opera again.

My conclusion too!

That's been my conclusion, too. I installed FF3 on one machine and now my browser sessions are crashing a lot ... FF3 seems to have been let out of the gate just a tad early this time. I'm sticking with FF2 for now.

Cannot download file

OK, I probably would download files mostly at home, but maybe others will have similar issues. Our company firewall blocks the download of this Zip file. I think it may be a security measure as ZIP files are a common way of spreading viruses and such. Why not just make the link to the PDF file itself?

joef's picture

We can link to the PDF ...

We can link to the PDF as well, but the magazine may have other content associated with it and it's helpful to have the zip option to package it all up neatly.

The good news is Adobe 9 now has rich "package" capabilty, so we may want to pursue that option as an alternative to the zip file.

Probably the best will be do offer both options. Then whatever works ... !
