Facebook Groups
OK, Facebook groups ARE generally run by "real" model railroaders. Yes, Facebook is it's own entity, but the groups themselves are moderated by model railroaders, just like Yahoo groups and other areas. I'm not a huge facebook fan, but there are a few groups I regularly review there and some good stuff. Again, just because YOU don't like it or have no need for it, doesn't mean everyone else is just not enlightened enough to see what you see. It just might mean YOU are not enlightened enough to see the value in multiple sources.

I should have said "owned" instead of "run" then. My main point is supporting the hobby directly instead of thru Facebook. I'd rather Joe gets the ad revenue than Facebook who has plenty. .....DaveB

Why bash something?
I don't get bashing groups that you haven't even investigated. I belong to multiple facebook rail groups and agree with these guys. The topics can find posters for amazingly narrow topics and the posting can be prolific.
It is way harder to catch everything the group posts though due to the flow of information. It isn't organized like it is here. If it were organized though I would likely never leave there to find hobby info since it taps into a lot more people talking. It isn't better or worse than here it is just different and I really enjoy aspects of both places. I too can't imagine limiting myself to one site since there are people there who don't post here. I do make mention of this site but I do that to club members who I see in person and can't get some of them to check it out. I am only willing to put so much effort into that sort of thing. In short, I can hunt rabbits anywhere but sometimes it is a lot easier to go where all the rabbits are...
I will note that facebook is generally not where I look for craftsman level work although there is some of it. I do like the wildley experimental nature of the social groups though. You just may find you haven't even scratched the surface on how to lay track...

Changes in Life Changes in the Hobby
For the past 12 years my best friend from our time in the Marine Corps has been dreaming ( his dream, my construction & artistic ability!) of building a huge steel mill with 3 blast furnaces, 3 electric furnaces, 2 coke ovens, and 3 rolling mills as his centerpiece and 50 other various structures to complete his dream Last winter, we lost my friend, my buddy since boot camp when we were 17 ended his service to our nation due to complications from his times in Vietnam...primarily due to contact with Agent Orange
I can not bring myself to build his dream.
I would like to know other than ebay where I can go to sell his dream in one or two good size purchases to help his widow with some leftover expenses There are approximately 58 building and accessories (cranes etc) along with 3 locomotives and 60 pieces of rolling stock for sale all are unbuilt, most are still wrapped in plastic I'm located outside of Erie,Pa there are no hobbies shops nearby that I could go for help I would be willing to travel into East Cleveland, Western New York, and south to North Pittsburgh to lower the shipping costs to prospect buyers
If this wasn't the place to ask for the help or to get the word out Please...my apologies!!
Thank You
Keith

You will do best selling them one at a time on Ebay or in decently sized lots. It does take time, so I would consider it worthy to receive a part of the proceeds for your effort, something along the line of 25% or 50% after ebay/paypal fees would not be unordinary.
Each blast furnace alone might bring in $250.

@Sandman
There are many Classified groups on Facebook that are geared toward selling. Lots or Singles are acceptable in most.
There is a previous discussion on the topic here: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/24427

Community Presence
I think you will find a lot more of us will follow more closely than you might think. No more waiting on the monthly deadline for our interests in all things trains. On some of the other pages on FB, you will find a lot of sharing of ongoing projects by everyone from serious modelers to brand new people to the hobby. Hopefully your community pages will enable us to share what we are doing and how we are doing it.
fb & twitter
Facebook and twitter are only a distraction which I don't need. I use MRH to relax in the evening and end the day on a happy note.
As was suggested earlier sell
As was suggested earlier sell them on ebay as individual items. Many of the kits are no longer in production and you might be able to get retail for them. Do not dump them all at once you will saturate the market and drive the price down. Big lots always go for less than individual items. Put 5 or 6 items on at a time set a minimum bid and let the folks drive up the price. End your auctions Sunday afternoon and when you are paid ship them during the week. You should be able to get them ready to ship after the auction and then address them and be ready to drop them at the post office. Get insurance and then if the post office destroys or misdirects them you still get paid. Take a realistic fee for your work, postage plus your time and expenses for packaging materials. If for example you sell one of the larger kits for 250.00 you might only have 35.00 in shipping, time and packaging, that would be a nice return for your friends widow. You can look at some old walthers catalog for prices on the items. Some of the rolling stock for the steel mills were fairly expensive models as well. You might be surprised at what you get in return for them.
Also at the bottom of the ads you might mention that you are selling a collection for a widow and folks can contact you for specific items not advertised that they are interested in. Put those items out next and you should be able to sell it all fairly quickly at a decent return.
