2019 National Train Show - The Layouts

I've decided to give the layout photos their own blog post, primarily because there are going to be a lot of photos here, so there will be some pretty long pages.

On Friday I decided to try something different - I have a 10-18mm wide angle lens, and I wanted to see how well it would do for layout photography. I went back to my normal 18-135mm zoom on Saturday, because I decided I wanted the ability to zoom in more than I could with the 10-18.

On with the layouts....

2019 National Train Show - Day 3 - it's over

Okay, it's 8:30pm-ish here in Salt Lake City. The train show has been over for 4 1/2 hours (not including post show teardown time) and I'm just now getting to this. Dinner with Joe, Patty, Eric and my wife was lovely.

Fair warning... this may take a couple days. My wife and I drove down here in two days, the first was about 8 1/2 hours, the second 3/12 hours. Google says it's going to take 12 1/2 hours straight driving to get home (not counting food, bathroom, and fuel breaks).

LIVE VIDEO from the Salt Lake City National Train Show!

Let’s try some live video from the National Train Show today. They'll be fairly short ... but we'll do noon and 2 pm Mountain time.

The first one at noon will be a quick visit to the MRH Booth and we'll also take in a few layouts at the train show as a test. If that’s successful, we'll do another at 2 pm visiting with a few vendors.

2019 National Train Show - Day 2 - Getting behind....

I have sort of a tradition at these events... falling way behind. I'd pretty much avoided that this week (Contest Room was definitely slipping though), but tonight.... full stop.

No, nothing bad.

2019 NMRA Convention - Day 5 - Train Show setup an a presentation by Arrowhead

Thursday of NMRA Convention week is one that is looked forward to with both anticipation and a bit of trepidation. It is load-in and setup day for the National Train Show.

This means that for the vendors and layout participants they've got to get everything up and running in a fairly limited amount of time - while everyone else is trying to drive their truck and trailer around you.

It's the day you find what didn't survive the trip to the show, and what you forgot to pack or bring with you.

2019 NMRA Convention - Joes Musings

Yesterday I did five clinics total: Run like a Dream - two sessions in the morning, 8am and 11am Painting models in a post-Floquil world - one session, 1pm Siskiyou Line 2 - two session, 6:30pm and 8pm I think that’s the most clinics I’ve ever given in one day ... my previous record was four clinics in one day. Today, Thursday, is setup at the train show and our new MRH Staffer, Eric Hansmann shows up to help with the MRH presence at the show.

2019 NMRA Convention - Day 4 - Clinics, the arrival of MRH, and regrouping on Wednesday.

Wednesday morning arrived the same way as Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - with an alarm on my phone going off.

2019 NMRA Convention - Day 3 - Busy beaver has a near disaster...

To start at the end, today nearly ended with a double-disaster for yours truly. I was out walking after finishing with the clinics I was going to today when I spotted a US Army Apache helicopter flying over the downtown SLC area. Maybe the natives are used to it, but that was something that made me grab for the camera I had on a sling by my side.

And I dropped my cell phone, face down, on the concrete sidewalk.

2019 NMRA Convention - Day 2 - Getting into the groove

With the first day of the 2019 NMRA Convention completed more-or-less successfully (unless you were a passenger on the bus that broke down), Day 2 appeared to be getting into the groove of the thing. At 8am 5 separate clinics, including a Make 'n' Take and the LD-SIG Bootcamp started up, as well as 3 separate layout tours and a General Interest Tour - Promontory Summit - There and Back.
