O scale - A modified tank car

Hello to all!

I would like to show you and to explain what I've done with a Atlas tank car. This tank has two lives.

To begin, I've bought a Atlas Trainman 8000 gals tank car there is a little more than 10 years ago.

I used the tank to scratchbuild a 1918 US imported tank car for the french railroads. The tank was too long (just a few millimeters). So I've cut down it to obtain the good size.

Recently, I would like to use this tank on his previous chassis to obtain a US tank car for my new project. The tank was now a little bit too small but I live with it.

I cleaned the tank of its previous paint and use a grey primer to see if the surface is ok.

Then, I've rebuilt the handrails with the supports, the footplate and modified the dome openings.

When ready, I spray two coats of matt black. On the photo, the paint is drying

I draw the data and the logo of the Gulf company with the help of my computer and print the sheet. I use a HO scale model to help me.

Here is the result

I made a scale and plates for the danger from styrene.

And after some weathering...

From this time I've added air hoses and I have to change the couplers with Kadee ones.

Thank you Nick!

Yes I have something like 20 cars from Atlas/Roco and Weaver to modify, to upgrade and to weather for my shortline layout project.

I like to buy cheap rolling stock to upgrade and weather it.

Jack, all of your work just keeps us O scalers motivated....I like the tank project, the weathering is such a good application. Outstanding, bravo.

Good job on the car, but as

Good job on the car, but as with the others cars you showed us so far, I especially like the weathering – very realistic an convincing.

Thank you Pierre and Kurt!

Pierre: I'm happy to provide some motivation to you and to anybody. Thank you.

Kurt: for me the weathering is very important to give the "realistic" look.

News

I've upgraded this tank car adding uncouplers levers and air hoses. I've changed the Atlas couplers with KD type E models. The car has a better looking now.
