Landscape fails

It is not working for me this month. A would like the landscape format but refuses to load, portrait works fine. Several attempts have stopped just as it ends and an auto load kicks in. Each time I get an error message and stops. David

A problem repeatedly occurred on "http://mrhpub.com/2015-06-jun/download/64.MRH15-06-Jun-LE.pdf?utm_downloader&utm_medium=web&camp;utm_campaign=mrh1506".  For what it is worth.

Landscape Embeded Edition Fail on iPad

Guys, I am having trouble as well with the larger embedded edition on my iPad with OS 8.3. The page loads almost to the end then the web page crashes. An auto reload kicks in with a repeat of the same.

The smaller Standard Edition in landscape works as fyi.

Hope it works soon.......

Let me say it again

Let me say it again, and say it really big and bold this time:

THE EMBEDDED EDITION IS ONLY FOR USE IN ADOBE READER ON PCS - IT IS NOT FOR ANY OTHER DEVICE, NOR IS IT TESTED OR SUPPORTED ON ANY OTHER DEVICE THAN PCS.

If you're downloading or trying to download the embedded edition to iPads, that is a total waste of bandwidth. The embedded media makes it huge, and the embedded media will NOT play on iPads anyway.

Also, iPad browsers do one thing really poorly - and that's downloading huge files.

If you want to download really large files to an iPad, do NOT use a browser to do it. Use a download manager app. There are a couple of really good ones:

1. GoodReader - it's $5 and you can do downloads within GoodReader, including downloading zip files and unzipping them. To download MRH inside GoodReacder, follow the steps listed here. We can't say enough good things about GoodReader - it's an excellent app for downloading and viewing our publications and videos.

2. iDownloader - get the free version. Use it to download large files and then open them in the app of your choice, be that iBooks or some other PDF reader.

The June issue Embedded Edition has lots of really large video files, making it almost 1/4 of a Gig in size. That is sure to croak any iPad if you're trying to use a browser.

Many of the MRH staff has iPads and we use GoodReader to download MRH's Standard Edition from our website all over the place (the staff are located all over the US and Canada, plus we're at shows a lot and demonstrating downloading for folks) and happily read it from month to month and never have any problems.

Embedded edition is huge this month

The error message you give shows you're trying to download the Embedded Edition. This month, the Embedded Edition is almost 1/4 of a GIG - HUGE in other words. Some folks will find downloading files that large to be a problem.

If that happens, try a different browser and make sure you try the mirror (Backup server) as well as the primary. If those keep failing, then consider getting yourself a download manager. A download manager does a better job with very large files, and it lets you restart failed downloads in the middle, effectively changing a very large download into several smaller ones, which often gets you over the hump.

You can also try the Standard Edition. The only difference between the two editions is the embedded media. The quality of the content (images, etc) is identical between the editions as of Jan 2015 and the move to Gen3.

Good to know Joe

Joe thanks for that.

I'm not much good at the techy stuff, here I thought I was getting some extra info all in one place. ( you know bigger  is better lol )

Little did I know I am just burning up memory on my iPad, I have all editions from the beginning on my iPad/cloud and all are Embedded. Never had any issue until this massive file for June.

Damn, Standard editions from here on in.

suggestion...

Rather than having browsers choose their edition by type, why not ask them to choose what kind of device they are using and offer the editions that are appropriate for that?

Tablets & Smart Phones:

  • Landscape Standard Edition
  • Portrait Standard Edition

PC's:

  • Landscape Standard Edition
  • Portrait Standard Edition
  • Landscape Embedded Edition
  • Portrait Embedded Edition

Or something like that.

Ideas are cheap - it's implementing them

great suggestion posted here by you, Bill and i really wonder why they cant think like this..!!!

Yes, we've already thought of this long ago and been mulling it over for a while ... But ideas are the easy part. Ideally, this would use a multi page form or AJAX scripting to do a reveal of the next part based on the previous answers - but then we need to code it and test it on multiple devices and make the page smart so it adapts to the vast array of different devices out there.

We'd like to do this eventually, but we're a small shop and this would be a major project probably spanning a couple months - time we would not be building magazines, videos or eBooks. Or we pay someone to do it for us - but with our flagship being free and our ad pricing being very affordable, we don't have a lot of cash laying around.

Now if some web-savvy AJAX programmer would like to volunteer the two months for free, then I'd love to do this project. We'll need someone who has access to PCs, Macs, iOS and Android devices to do the initial testing before we release it to Beta.

It would work like this ... And each question would have a "what is this?" help link.

1. What device are you using? PC, Mac, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android tablet, Android Phone

PC

2. Do you prefer portrait or landscape?

3. Do you want the media embedded (much larger download) or not?

4. Do want to use our main server or try the backup server (different location might be faster)?

5. Offer the one download link that applies

Since tablets are only using a basic pdf reader, can we please have page numbers in the table of contents? The links do not work.
