What's the best iPad app for reading MRH?

Short answer: We prefer GoodReader.

Long answer: We prefer the application, GoodReader. It's about $5 in the app store, and it's a fabulous PDF viewer. We're optimizing our issues to work with GoodReader, allowing you to tap on the left or right edge of a page to navigate forward or backwards in the issue.

We also like GoodReader because of the way it handles links. It opens up a browser to show the web link you selected - and it gives you a nice "back" button that takes you right back to the page you left when you're done.

You can also use iBooks to read our magazine, but it doesn't handle links at nicely as GoodReader.

Update: With the new multi-tasking OS on the iPad, using iBooks works okay now, too. Once you click a link in the magazine, the browser launches and takes you to the link you clicked. You can double-click the large home button to get all the running apps to show - then just tap iBooks to go back to the magazine where you left off. Still not quite as convenient as GoodReader, but getting closer!

Another option is to use

Another option is to use DropBox. It is free like iBooks. However, it does not have as many bells and whistles. One advantage is that you don't have to store the files on the iPad. You can retrieve them from the "cloud" while on the go.

Of course there is also Safari. Or, there is an alternative browser called Atomic Web (free). Atomic Web has a full screen mode that moves the toolbars out of the way and displays the document full screen.

Foxit Pro?

I've had good luck with Foxit Pro on Windows OS's and Android. I'd be interested in hearing how well it works under IOS - esp. IOS 7. It's free. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/foxit-pdf/id507040546?mt=8

Goodreader with Dropbox

I will second the GoodReader app for reading MRH. I download the monthly issue to my iPad using Dropbox.

Just copy the monthly issue to Dropbox. I put it in a directory called MRH. I also rename the issues to reflect the year and month of the issue.

Example: Oct 2013 is renamed to 1310_MRH_2013_Oct.pdf

13 is the year. 10 is for the month.

The 1310 will make sure the magazine will be in the correct order in your directory.

I have all the issues on my iPad. They are installed on GoodReader. But I create a directory called MRH and in the MRH directory I create directories for each year.

I held off spending the $5 for Good Reader.

Now I'm sorry I did. It is as seamless an experience as you will ever see! Do it!

GoodReader not updated for iOS 11

Just wanted to point out that GoodReader stops working with the upgrade to iOS11. No word from GoodReader about this, I could find anything about their future plans to update the app.

Doing some research now about the best way to download and read MRH on my iPad (I prefer not to read it online - I liked downloading and reading via GoodReader).

Anyone have any thoughts on reading MRH with the new iOS11?

Mini

I read the online version on my mini. OS11 will have to wait until this weekend when I can get to fast wifi and not data.

iBooks also works, but ...

iBooks also works, but it's not as nice as GoodReader.

The last major upgrade that broke GoodReader was iOS 7 I believe. It took them a couple months to get caught up.

A good reason to be slow to upgrade. I typically wait at least a couple months before rushing out and upgrading the OS.

I've been reading them on my

I've been reading them on my iPad at home and abroad and didn't even know there was another way to read MRH.

Now I have figure out what iOS version I have.

I use documents

It has a file structure and I can mount the location on my Mac and simply drag and drop the new edition into the correct folder. I have all the editions on my iPad

An added benefit is I clan also access my cloud drives directly from the app and hyperlinks from MRH open in a browser that’s built right in. There are also some add ones available to extend its capabilities too

Like good reader it too allows swiping to get to the next or previous page.

Finally it’s ios11 savvy   - I’ve been beta since start with ios11 and no issues to report.

ive had it for years so cannot tell you how much I paid, but check it out it might do what you want.

Documents app works great

Simon, thanks for the heads up about Documents. I downloaded this (free) and quickly figured out how it works in about 5 minutes, and have the September issue downloaded now. My biggest desire was to be able to download direct within the reader app, and Documents does this (no need to use a laptop and perform syncing to the iPad or a cloud, unless you want to).

As a long time GoodReader user I actually prefer this. Easier to navigate to the web link and do the download. And works with iOS11.

So if anyone looking for temporary, or permanent, solution on GoodReader, I'd suggest trying Documents as well.

Good Reader and iOS 11--It does work

I downloaded iOS 11 Tuesday and Good Reader does work. You have to make sure you have the latest version of Good Reader. I have 4.12.1 and it works fine with iOS 11.

You check the version number by going to Settings and scroll down the left column of apps until you come to Good Reader and then highlight it. The information will be displayed in the right column under the "Show File Thumbnails" button..

Thanks, HTH Simon.

GoodReader version 4

I see what was up. I had a version of GoodReader purchased a while back, version 3, that was discontinued. GoodReader 4 works with iOs11 but requires a new $4.99 purchase. Just thought I would mention so no one was waiting for a GoodReader update before moving to iOS11.

Adobe Acrobat

I download with GoodReader and then copy to Adobe Acrobat.  Acrobat scrolls very smoothly.
