If you don't know what RSS is, you NEED to watch this!

RSS is one of those funny things that seems to get ignored a lot - yet if more modelers knew about it, they could save tons of time on the internet.

With RSS you can literally spend LESS time on the internet and get MORE useful info from the web to help you do the hobby. It's THAT USEFUL.

If you feel like you're spending too much time online as it is and would like to get more modeling done, then you owe it to yourself to check out RSS.

Great info!

While I knew what RSS feeds were I have never looked beyond the surface at them.  I see they deserve a second look...NO SPAM!!!  I never thought of that and I am probably what you would call a techie! [grin]

I think I may have to get the Feedly add-on for my browser and hook up to some MRH feeds!

Thanks for a great video on the subject!

Once again Joe Your the man!!!!! Thanks for the Video!!

I was trying to figure this RSS feed thing out on my own after the post you made during the NMRA Show. I got about 60% in to setting it up and then lost interest when I couldn't make it work properly. So now I'll try again and I think it's one great way to get my up to date information in front of me where before I was jumping all over the internet. Thanks Again but I think I'll have more to read than I read already lol.

OK I use Firefox and I did

OK I use Firefox and I did the Freedly reader and then it loaded 96 pages of crap and news feeds I never look at and put MRH last and so far MRH is the only feed I wanted. Lost again.

Just delete the ones you don't want

Just delete the feeds you don't want.

Like some other software you install, they give you common extras.

If you don't like that, you can also use what I use ... Google reader.

Feedly Setup

OK I use Firefox and I did the Freedly reader and then it loaded 96 pages of crap and news feeds I never look at and put MRH last and so far MRH is the only feed I wanted. Lost again.

I too use Feedly. It does require a little bit of setup time to get it organized the way you like it but once you do it is a tremendous time saver. Look closely at the Digest and Blogroll. They will help you sort how your most important feeds rise to the top.

Joe .

OK Got it thanks again Joe. I wish the Feedly had a delete all button. Turned out that I deleted everyone of their we think we know what you like RSS sites lol.

I'm still unsure what its function is or how it works but I'll figure it out or load the google reader which is looking to be my next step.

Question: I go to a site that has the RSS tag and I click on it and subscribe. and I come to MRH and do the same.

Now what do I do to get the latest news 3 days later? do I need a RSS short cut or the google reader short cut on my desk top in order  to retrieve the latest news?

Just Open Feedly

Open Feedly in Firefox and all of your unread RSS feeds should be there. You could place a Feedly shortcut on your desktop to make it easier.

Helpful MRH RSS feeds

One of the very best ways to follow certain blogs is to use RSS feeds. RSS feeds are one of the webs most powerful but least understood features. Once you start using RSS feeds, you'll never want to depend on email again - email is full of spam, while RSS feeds are spam-free and in effect the website tells you when there's something new to look at.

To learn more about RSS feeds for model railroaders, watch this video in MRH Theater.

The above video is a little dated - Google Reader is no longer available, but no matter. The Feedly Reader is simply fabulous, and a wonderful way to consume the RSS feeds on this website.

It you want the feed link for all recent posts, then go here:
http://mrhmag.com/tracker_rss

To find the RSS feed for any given blog from a blog entry, first click the top level blog link, like so:

Finding the link to a blog's index page

Then on the person's blog index page, scroll down and click the orange RSS feed link to get the RSS URL for that person's blog. In this example the link is: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/blog/355/feed

Getting the RSS feed link for a specific person's blog

Paste this link into Feedly and you're all set. Any time there's something new, Feedly will tell you. Here's What Mike Deverell's blog looks like once it's loaded into Feedly - notice how wonderfully visual Feedly is - RSS in Feedly beats email notifications all to pieces:

Mike Deverell's blog in Feedly ...

That's how you do it ... one of the top ways people read our website is with Feedly - RSS feeds are so cool once you realize how they bring new content to you and you no longer need to go searching for what's new all the time!
