Scanning 35mm slides to digital files
I want to transfer some 35mm slides to digital files. I'm talking about fewer than 50 slides. They are prototype shots I took in Kansas in the 1970's. Anybody have any experience with this? I have found small scanners for slides and negatives but I'm not sure what the results will be like. There is one listed on line for less than $100 that has good reviews. Cheaper ones have less good reviews. I don't know if there is an adapter for my Epson all-in-one that would work. I like the scanner in the printer and have scanned a lot of documents, some even railroad related...
PFE, SP, WP & UP
I have a few PFE reefers in my inventory for the 50's-60's era, they add some nice colour to the layout. I'm currently in the process of preparing waybills for my layout and have had no luck in locating shipper information, locations and companies (co-ops), for PFE shippers. Lots of information available on the net about the organization of PFE and specific cars, but nothing on the many shippers.
Modern Scene/Industry?
I was entering my home town last evening (Waterbury Vermont, which is on the New England Central or former Central Vermont mainline) and my SO yelled TRAIN!
I pulled over, and checked it out.
For those of you who are not in the know, the NEC is replacing most of it's northern mainline with single heavy duty welded rail, a process that's quite fascinating.
What I observed here though, was something that may be of use to modern modelers who are looking for a small scene or industry.
Need info S.Carolina railroad
A friend of mine was hiking in South Carolina when he came across an abandoned rail line. He called me to see if I could tell him some history about it before he returns next month for more hiking. Made me laugh how friends find out you are building a model railroad and all of a sudden you become the default railroad expert. Of course I know nothing about railroads in South Carolina.
By chance is anybody familiar with the Pickens area in South Carolina? Specifically, the Eastatoe Creek Preserve near Rocky Bottom.
Santa Fe Colors
Research tells me that from the 1920s to the 1960s ATSF Depots and some other wooden buildings were painted "Colonial Yellow" for the walls, "Bronze Green" for the trim and red for the roof. Where can I find these colors already mixed or the color mixing guidelines? Also, what was the green for steam locomotive cab interiors?
Rail ferry
For whom was looking for ferry info, found this one today:

This ferry is as basic as they come. Proportions can be guesstimated from pic. Please note the bridge in the middle of the breeze!
Steel Groups+
Don has posted some great photos of his steel mill, and I thought it an opportune time to mention some groups out there that can help others. These are generally industry specific and most are for model railroaders.

What are your favorite ride-along railroads?
Apparently I stepped on a few toes with my "The Doldrums" editor's soapbox in the June issue by omitting a number (a large number) of railroads where you can ride along historic rails, sometimes behind steam power.
Baltimore Police Detain Hearing Impaired Man for Taking Photos at Rail Station
I found this story on TheBlaze.com Seems like an isolated incident but makes me wonder how our rail fanning activities will be curtailed in the future. . .
