Modeling general discussion

Capacity- LD LMT

I'm working up a sheet of decals for my personal line and am confused by the weight marks

Capacity does not equal the load limit plus the light weight and the load limits of trucks doesn't equal either,

based on some photos and reading. How were these numbers actually used?

Best supplier of modeling materials

I of ten have to order a variety of materials related to modeling — some are MRR specific —other are like solder wick.  I end up paying shipping fees from 4-5 sellers.  What is the source with the biggest variety in its inventory? Of course I am aware of Micro-mark and Walters.

Magnetic couplers of choice?

Looking to change out couplers. Change to the best magnetic couplers as a consensus of experienced modelers.

Also looking to change out plastic wheels to metal.

Micro Trains has 36” and 33”. What’s that all about?

Seriously, n scale is n scale -  right?

I’m not getting the 36” and 33” part.

Switching layout - N or HO?

After being an armchair model railroader for more years than I'd like to admit I finally have time to build a layout. I am planning on a shelf style, around the walls layout (room size roughly 10' x 12') with the emphasis on switching. I have been strongly influenced by the work of Lance Mindheim. Operationally, meaning how well the locomotives run, I am interested in any thoughts on N vs HO. N offers more volume for the space I have but my main concern is how well does it run for a switching type layout.

On30, are any of Bachmann's On30 loco motives?

On30, are any of Bachmann's On30 loco motives designed after locomotives that actually existed?  If so, which ones?

Weekly Photo Fun - Jun 14-20, 2020

It's another week . . . post 'em if you got 'em.  We had two WFPs last week.  You may have missed one entirely, but can see it here.  There were a few late-comers in the other, so see them here.  Check them out, then come back here afterward.

Rolling stock

I like KATO rolling stock. It’s hefty, easy to rail, stays on the tracks.

On the other hand, Bachmann is a toy, while I’ve had bad experiences with Model Power.

I know there’s a lot of options. I wonder: what rolling stock do you prefer, and which brand fails in your humble opinion?

I’m dumping my Bachmann toys, won’t buy Model Power again, looking for sturdy rolling stock.

Choo choo won't choo choo.

For Father's Day, I got a new locomotive today.

It's an n scale Metal 2-6-0 Mogul, "DCC and Sound Equipped. U.S. Army".

I can't get it to run on demand, the whistle won't whistle, it's more like an air release than a whistle.

Anyone got any instructions?

It's just sitting there now with the speed toggle at 10, two chugs in the last couple of minutes.

Anyone got any ideas?

Silicon paint?

In the June 2020 What's Neat, John Regier does a very thorough upgrade of an Athearn GP60. At least a couple of times he uses what he calls "silicon paint." It looks like something I can use. I have searched for it in all the usual places including on this forum. What is it? Where can I buy it?

Old N Scale Locos

I have 3 N scale locos dating to the mid to late 60's. All Atlas, 0-8-0 and a couple of diesel units. Don't run and iffy detail.

So the question is are they worth keeping or should I send them to the trash heap. Can they be re-motored?

Thanks, Jack
