Add an overflow pipe for your pond / lake now available as a free PDF

First, Thanks to Alan of the LK&O for teaching me how to setup the link for the PDF.

A while back I had shared on my blog on MRH how to scratch build a overflow pipe for a pond / lake along with doing the scenery work around the water.  There is a picture below of the area nearly completed on my previous Richlawn RR.  If you're interested in having a downloadable step-by-step then just click on the link.

Single Stall Engine House Part 2

I had a busy weekend but managed to apply some paint. I was able to get the vintage white applied but ran to into some issues when applying the green for the two tone as you'll see in the images to follow. so I'm a little dissapointed in my paint job and trying to figure out how to resolve the issue before moving on.

First two pics show Vintage White Acrylic applied.

Transfer Terminal Kitbash - Dimensions and Decisions

There's a recent forum thread on the topic of how to dimension a structure from photos, so what follows is a brain dump of how I designed my kitbashed structure. Given I'm not trying for an exact copy -- more like "as close as I can get with Pikestuff parts" -- just how do I decide how big to make this thing, and all the individual bits of it?

Alternate materials for scenery, landscape, terrain, rocks and trees modeling

I recently purchased a new micro cut paper shredder and after shredding tons of old paper clutter, I realized that the shredded paper was so fine that it could be used to build model scenery, rocks and landscape.

Most of us own some kind of paper shredder but the stuff from the "cross cut" type really works, since it cuts it very fine. Micro-cut shredders produce much finer particles, so they can be used in scenic modeling requiring smoother surfaces..

Tuckahova Tower. French mix. 1/48

Here is a small tower, some kind of a -free- blend between Tuckanoe and Nova tower.

This is my first full scratched wood building, and i hope not the last. Not intended to be fully realistic, but done just as a trial...US Railroad see through French eyes...wink

Built using only wood, pieces by pieces.

Single Stall Engine House Part 1- updated

So the sun finally popped out to do a bit of priming. I also did some preliminary assembly before priming. As I looked through the instructions I saw several smaller brace pieces that had to be attached to the sides and ends, so I figured rather than fiddle with painting the little bits individually I’d glue them in place and prime the side and end panels, as you’ll see why in the following pics.

Photo interpretation basics for scratch building

Here are some photo interpretation basics for converting a photo into usable dimensions for scratch building. This technique was used when I was working in Naval Intelligence and interpreting U-2 aerial photography of Cuban missile sites. Stereoscopic imagery was normally used, but for our use, single photos are sufficient.

Next Project, Single Stall Engine House

This is the next Structure Project for my layout, A single stall engine house by American Model Builders. Looks to be a little more complicated than the last project.

I'll post progress as I go.
