DCC - Electrical

Auto Reversers and Frog Juicers

I was poking around the MERG site and asked a question about auto reversers and frog juicers. On poster expressed an opinion that those sorts of circuits carry an inherent flaw in that they depend on a short circuit to work. Shorts, of any kind, can result in spikes on the DCC signal which we know can harm decoders.

I am not very familiar with the functions of these types of things and less knowledgeable about the format of the DCC signal. Is there merit to his opinion? Has anyone experienced that kind of thing when using an autoreverser or juicer?

MERG - Model Electronic Railway Group

I recently came across a group called MERG (Model Electronic Railway Group). They are a UK based group that are concerned with the use of electronics in model railroading. Electrons flow the same in the UK as they do here in North America so I decided to check them out.

Switching power supply DOA - chance to learn.

Hello,

I've kept a 12 volt switching power supply that I want to use to light my layout area.  It is one of three.  It was DOA, the other two worked and I thought worst case I'd get a parts box....  and maybe a little time on the learning curve.

How to use an Arduino to control Tortoise switch motors

OK, here is the deal …..
I have 2 turnouts that I want to control automatically so that human error is taken out of the equation.

Basically I have a condition where the train entering one turnout will determine the position of the second turnout. The sequence of operation is as follows (see schematic for turnout location and positions)

Mosquito Flat Diagram

Code 5,000 rail

I’ve got a couple of 8’ lengths of 85 pound rail kicking around that came from my great uncle Bob’s place. He worked for the Boston and Albany back when his job was trimming wicks and pouring kerosene for signal lamps. I hate to see a family heirloom like that sitting outside rusting and I’m needing a change of pace from the buildings I’ve been working on lately. Time to do something about this.

Dr. Geoff Bunza and SMA 12

The SMA 12 Arduino decoder is a great help, however having more than 100 turnouts on the layout, is there an option to enter 4-digit addresses in the Arduino? I think currently they only work with 2-digits.

Many thanks for your feedback!
Mark

Sucessful LokSound (Rapido) install

Well, I just finished programming my first ESU LokSound decoder install. It is a LokSound Select with a sound file created and installed by Rapido Trains for an F unit. Rapido sells these at a great price and they include an iPhone 4 style speaker. I have to say it sounds amazing. I am installing this for a friend and he wanted it loud. When he heard my Tsunami sound equipped loco he immediately asked for more volume, so volume I gave him and this thing has it in spades.

Digitrax/Rr-cirkits signaling

I am looking for some feedback on the digitrax and rr cirkits signalling products, I prefer induction for detection so that's why I mention rr cirkits over digitrax diode method.

What I am looking to do is have two ctc islands on opposite ends of my layout, it comes out to around 10 detection blocks and the need to control a set of double set crossovers and a few other switches but are all in the same cp. Eventually I'd like to ctc the whole layout which is a combination of single and double track ctc in a 28x64 ft space.
