Operation and maintenance

Operations: planning (too far) ahead

I recently attended another enjoyable ops session at Charlie Comstock's Bear Creek and South Jackson.  I drew my favorite job, the Oak Hill Turn.  The OHT crew boards the train in South Jackson, picks up empty log cars and drops loaded ones at Mill Bend, switches Oak HIll, returns log loads picked up at Oak Hill to Mill Bend and terminates at South Jackson.  We operate with two person crews, an engineer/head brakeman and conductor/brakeman.

RAILOP.com

Last weekend, I visited the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.  (4 layouts:  it is a must-see!!!)

While talking with the N-scale folks at SDSoNS, I was introduced to RailOp, a program that basically databases your trains and the layout, then can generate operations lists (switchlists).  I got a bunch of "plus's" and "got to have's" from the guys at the club.  Has anyone else used the program?  Plus's?  Minus's?

American Flyer Operations Layout

Last night was operating night, and I brought the video camera. Well, I spent the evening re-wiring a AC 4-8-2, so we didn't run many trains, but as I had the camera with me,  I shot a quick video of the layout at the end.

More next time!

Live Ops #4

I got Live Ops #4 in the mail on Friday and had to wait until Saturday night to watch it.  Another hit!!!.  I like the suttle changes in format - following trains.  It's hard to believe it's been a year since Live Ops #3.

The layout looks good Charlie.  Nice to look for the changes between the two DVDs.

Looking forward to the next Live Ops already as I try to wear out #4!

Track Warrants and Yard Limits

Hallo together,

at our last gathering I gave a  "Check box 2: Proceed from XY to Appaloosa Junction; Check box 10: Clear main track at last named point" - warrant to the crew of a local. Appaloosa Junction was under Yard Limits from a little bit farther right as the photo shows right down to the red elevator at the upper edge of the photo.

Way Bill question

Ok so as I am re numbering some cars, I am also putting my car card and way bills together. I decided what I want on them and have made my own car cards. Since I’ll be wanting the 4 sided waybills I was looking towards Shenandoah Software for the way bills. I like the clean look of the printed way bill as opposed the fill in the blank style.

Track Warrent Control: Beginners guide?

Hi.

I'm new to Track Warrent Control, even though I have seen it been used in some OpSession videos and also listened to the prototype radio via internet (I live i Sweden).

Is there any good site to learn more about TWC?
And would it work without using radio between the drivers and the dispatcher?

Blocking the local freight

How do you block your local freights? All the cars to one station together?

If there is a small station with just one passing siding and spurs with both facing and trailing points, I would find it wise to put the car for the spur with a facing point in the rear and the car for the trailing point spur in the head end.

But that gives the yard crew a lot of things to have in mind - maybequite a headache, and I'd rather not do that. How do you block your trains? Station by station, or customer by customer?

Car Card and Way Bill use Question

I have only been to one Op’s session and they used switchlists.   I like the idea of switchlists (might be because I don’t know anything more than that) and I understand the problems associated with switchlists.   So I am looking at car cards and way bills.
