Decoder for a PCM T-1

I have a straight DC PCM Reading T-1.   Recently, I equipped it with a TCS T1 decoder using the quick plug.   The decoder programed fine on the programing track. When I put the T-1 on the main, I got a short, and released the magic smoke from the decoder.

Any ideas of what went worng?

Building up your rolling stock fleet...

My question to the MRH masses is:

"How did you build up your rolling stock, and what defines your choices?"

I'm at the stage in the layout build that I'd like to start building up my rolling stock so that as the layout develops I can start to run a few small ops sessions on the completed sections.

Problem with Bachmann 2-8-0

I recently got a nice DCC-equipped Bachmann 2-8-0.  It runs smoothly and looks nice.  But there seems to be one problem.

The wires between the engine and tender seem very stiff and tend to cause the tender to derail going through #4 switches. I've added weight to the tender and that helps a little but the problem still exists.

Has anyone else seen this and, more to the point, corrected it somehow (short of rewiring the connectors)?

How do you paint and weather this one?

The question tells the whole story. Notice the rust, the reversed lettering where the original lettering has peeled, and the patched number. Where do you start on a project like this?

Wood Chips

I got some good info when I posted on my log cars the other day. I'm working on getting my forest products traffic up to speed after ignoring that part of my layout for a while, so here are some wood chip cars. The first is from E&C shops. I don't think anybody else has done this particular car in HO.

Question regarding my Walthers "Chief" pasenger cars.

I have several of the older passenger cars that represent the Chief. I have noticed that they seem to have trouble rolling free. What is the best way to deal with the problem?

Symtoms include.... Squeeking, tightness in the bearings... actually that is about it.

Just thought I would pose the problem to the experts.

Modern Logging

I've slowly been addding a modern logging operation to my layout, based more or less on the Camas Prairie and the Oregon California & Eastern. Here's a Camas Prairie type BN log car, using an Athearn Blue Box 40 foot log car kit and the Details West log bunks. There was an article on doing this car in MR a long time ago, but the Details West instructions cover the same territory:

Here's a train, loaded:

Animation

Thought some of you might enjoy these animations. How people came up with these ideas amazes me.
