Painting Balsa Wood - Seal it First?

Does anyone have experience painting balsa wood on your buildings?  Being as soft as it is, I have a feeling the wood will soak up paint like a sponge.  I mostly curious if the wood should be sealed with something prior to painting.  I'll be using these 1/16"-thick clapboard siding panels. My plan is to cut the panels to size, cut the window and door openings, affix the window and door casings to the panel, and paint the panels on both sides.

Thanks!

R.I.P. track APRON

I would like to enclose my R.I.P. track in cement so that lifttrucks can move material and jacks can be used when replacing wheels.  I am toying with using plaster of paris or styrene but would like to hear how others have done theirs.

Thanks for any input.

Traincat etched brass kits

I am very late to the model train party but wondering if anyone can help me locate some of the Traincat towers and stairs/platforms kits (or built). Thanks,

Zip Ballasting in N scale

Having just watched Joe Fugate's video on zip ballasting I'd love to give it a try.  The Proses ballast spreader in HO has what appears to be a shut-off feature that looks like it'd be very handy when it comes to ballasting around a turnout, but that same feature isn't on the N scale spreader.

I'm wondering what tips N scalers have for ease in ballasting?

Thanks!

Help me find a wood model kit to fit this GN depot prototype

Hello all!  I am looking to model this old GN Depot as a modern day version of the structure. (used for storage)  However, I don't know where to start as far as a good wood kit that I could use a s a jumping of point.  If anyone has any Ideas, I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

Working the White River Junction Station

I have been posting reports on my progress on the station at White River Junction.  It is done. I have made a video handling of the trains at the station.  it is interesting because three trains can be at this small station at once. The space is very constrained, so the length of the tracks is quite short but the model still "works" as a model of the real thing.  It may be of interest that a model of this station was featured in Model Railroader about 20 years ago -- and it provided the solution to the toughest modeling challenge -- how to model the cupola.

Spray On Dirt

Now that I have your attention I want to tell you about a product from Rust-Oleum I found at ACE hardware.  It says Multicolor Textured on the can part no. 223524 Desert Bisque.  The sample lid has a grainy sand like feel with multicolor pigments.  I think this will speed up anyone's scenery and provide a nice base on which to add grass and weeds.  Try cutting up an old tee shirt and lay the strips over the areas you don't want painted.  Use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the fumes and overspray.

HO scale Diorama

My first wood build The Cundy Village Hotel, aka Sadie's BnB. I enjoyed the build.

Attaching Structure to Diorama Base

Looking for ideas on placing a structure onto the diorama base.  The base is carved from XPS foam insulating board shown in the first image - you'll see a gentle curve in the base from front-to-back which copies to topography of my landscape.  The second image shows a concept floor of the structure. The final floor will be cut from 1/8" plywood.  The third image shows the placement of the brick piers that will support the structure.

Florida Orange Grove

This is the Orange Grove I just finished up on my layout, in the last couple days. It is between Plant City and Tampa.
