Painting the track and Ballast in my yard
Hi All
I am modeling my N scale yard which I am hand laying using jigs from Fast Tracks. I am getting close to painting the rails and ties. I'm looking at giving most of it a coat of a grimy black colour as I model the transition years. I am thinking of using household latex paint for this. I have been reading on line what ever I can find about mixing this for airbrushing but I'm getting far more "Can't be done" articles than ones that explain hoe to do it.
Has anyone done this with good results or am I just wasting my time trying?
N scale scratch building plans
Here is a link to all 108 of my "Scratch sketch sets". Each set has assembly sketches, and printable PDF templates to make scratch projects easy. http://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=31109.0 No need to register or join.
Model Tech-love them!
I see that Model Tech Studios is now a sponsor--kudos to them, and to MRH for getting them onboard. Until a few months ago, I lived about 5 minutes from their location, and on a couple of occasions, was able to contact them and buy directly from their factory. They have fantastic stuff--I saw some of the completed models they have there--DROOL!!!!
Very nice people, too.
Furnace filters???
I've looked far and wide for these and cant find them. Are they still made?
Thanks
Dick

Help Please - Layout design
She who must be obeyed has agreed an extension to my small room layout. As can be seen in the drawing & photo below, (apologies for wonky tracks but I am still getting to grips with Scarm) the extension measures approximately 7 ft x 18”. The extension is sitting in the back corner of the room and 2ft of the extension will be in the room closet with a small hole in the wall to allow the tracks to pass through.
Shipping completed structures
I travel a lot. When I know I'm going to be somewhere for a while (several days or more) I have often brought along a model or two to work on, usually something like rolling stock that is relatively straightforward to pack securely in an assembled or even partially assembled state. I've never tried doing this with structures, since I have no idea how I'd get the assembled model home without actually shipping it. I guess I could put it in a box with a huge amount of air bags and/or styrofoam popcorn (yech). They certainly don't weigh much.

N scale turntable info needed
I recently purchased the Walthers round house kit # 107598 for my 2'x4' layout. I need to add a turntable. I've read that the Atlas ones are not compatable with this one. I don't plan on using DCC for my layout so one one those DCC compatible ones with the motor is not required. Has anyone used the Peco part # 552-1755 one? Would this one work? I would maybe make my own motor setup for it, and add a operators side shed to it.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

New construction vehicles?
Is anyone familiar with the new excavators being offered by Promotex?
Are they actually HO?
Who Makes them?

Thoughts about a retaining wall near my new turntable....
So if you were going to put a small retaining wall near a TT what would you model the wall as.... concrete? wood? random stone? To me, wood or random stone would be more interesting than concrete but then the thought occurs to me that if a railroad were going to go to all the trouble to pour a concrete TT pit that they would probably just do a retaining wall in close proximity that way as well. Thoughts?
