Cheap Realistic Trees

Hey all

Just wanted to share with you my latest YouTube video I did on making cheap realistic model trees.

It's not a very long video and the technique is quite easy to do, for the time spent making the trees the result is quite remarkable.

I also posted a short timelapse video on my website of me sitting at my workbench making one of these trees, over all it takes about 4 minutes depending on the tree you're trying to make.

Making HO scale snow fencing

In a recent Weekly Photo Fun thread, a couple people asked about the snow fencing in my Bluffs enginehouse scene.  I wrote that that fencing was made by a friend from the Yahoo Proto-Layouts list, Randy O'Brien, by applying a solvent to plastic window screen material, hammering it flat, and then painting it orange.

[N scale] Building the Colorado Convention Center : Steel & glass scratch built

Hello all. I am new there!

I am  a french n scaler, and i am building a N scale layout in my basement inspired from Rio Grande Railroad. The first part is a small town called Turtle Field. This part is finished. The second part called "Spirit of Denver" represent Denver around the merger with SP.

For this part i have started to build a model inspired by the Colorado Convention Center. I love this building because the Ligth rail is passing throught.

Good pitch

Adding "pitch" (black tar) around chimneys and roofing is a great detail to add to structures.  I always have a hard time applying the pitch whether using scale lumber of a small brush.  The pitch always seemed to come out a scale foot wide.

Looking for prototype examples of a turnout on a Thru Truss Bridge

I am attempting to squeeze in Central Valley Model Works new double track bridge into the Interim P&A.  It will have three spans.  The issue is because of the required location of the turnout on the north end of town, the track from the diverging route is not straight by the time it reaches the bridge.  It does not become straight and parallel until approximately 11" (or a scale 80').

Glue For Scenery

I've read several magazine articles where the authors used a mixture of white glue and water to glue down scenery.  Can you make that glue by mixing 2 parts water and one part Elmer's white glue in a spray bottle?  If so, how do you keep the spray mechanism from clogging with glue?  Do you have to run clear water through it every time you're done spraying the glue?

Thanks,

What color is the sky in your world?

Hello all! I have never had much luck at consistently mixing paints and matching them later.  So, i am looking for a formula or off the shelf color from one of the big box stores that would make a nice sky color.  Any suggestions or a "recipe" would be great.  Mostly just curious as to what base color folks use for the sky on their model railroads

Thanks in advance.

Painting a Timber Overpass

For the structure gurus out there:

I recently completed the assembly of a Rix rural timber overpass.  I plan to give it a creosote finish with a fairly heavy weathering to the roadway deck.  My plan is to airbrush the base coat on the entire bridge structure, then go back with various washes and dry brushing to weather and add color to the bridge.  Here's the manufacturer's photo of the structure:

Building an HO Scale Switching Layout; An ongoing experience... September 2017 Video!

Hi MRH Forum,

This is my representation of Southern Pacific's Burbank Branch that was active until the early to mid 90's. The branch ran through the San Fernando Valley serving a variety of local industries from Burbank to Chatsworth. I grew up in the valley and lived for a few years on Chandler Blvd., where I remember watching the local freight roll by.

Sandy ground

I built the Walthers sand and gravel facility (N scale) and want to place it on sandy ground like a sand pit.  Does anyone see any drawbacks to using sand from the ground outside as the sand for the ground?  I was going to spray the area with spray-on adhesive then brush on a thin coat of sand.

Thanks,

   Keith
