1920s-30s New Car Tires wrapped in paper ( HO Scale)

I need about 2 dozen tires as mentioned in the header, the real skinny old school type, for an old tire store I'm building. Curious as to whether anyone has already done these, and can give me some tips, or found them commercially?

Similar to the photo, but those are 1/24 scale, and more modern.

My plan A is to buy various size O-rings, and try wrapping them with tape, then painting them that light brown paper color, but I'd like to hear any suggestions you guys might have.
Thanks in advance

Looking for eastern US engine house designs

Hi - I'm aware that this is one of those questions Google image search should be able to answer, but in this case my keywords don't seem to be getting me the answers I'm looking for ... as ever, the hope is that my begging threads here will lead to something good to share with you in time.

I'm contemplating an engine house somewhere on my layout, and I'm looking for a prototype. Except I'm not sure such a prototype exists.

Black Valence/Fascia

In a recent comment, Joe wrote:

I did get several tasks done that it's only taken me nearly 25 years to get to, like completely installing all of the black-painted valance around the layout. No more back of upper deck benchwork on the lower deck! Makes the layout look a lot more finished.

Hmm, I think I was shocked.  Black?  I've been a fan of black fascias or valences for a long time but thought the common wisdom was to use a more scenic color like Pullman Green, or Olive Green or dirt color or whatever.

Working with real dirt and rocks

After an enjoyable vacation to the Owens Valley and Sierra Nevada, I came back with about 100 pounds of dirt and gravel from the right of way of the old Carson & Colorado.  The Laws museum was kind enough to offer an out of the way section of the track to dig on.

Facepalm

Today I got on a bus to go to the shoreline to take some photos my diorama outdoors and use the coast inland for the background, but after taking the first shot, my camera battery died. I only got one shot of the diorama. Hopefully next week I'll go again with the battery charged and an extra camera.

HO Scale Glass Block Windows

Do any manufacturers produce glass block windows that I can use for some brick buildings/warehouses? Or if no commercial options are available, does anyone have any scratch building techniques that I could use to make my own? My layout is an industrial switching layout, and I would like to include some glass block windows in order to vary the look a bit.

The roof of Martisco station

So I'm going to attempt a recreation of Martisco station from the New York Central in N Scale:

Question for the east coast modelers on ballast colors for track

Good afternoon everyone. Question for the east coast modelers. What would you recommend for a mainline ballast color and secondary track ballast color. On my layout the tracks are so close it does get a little confusing so I want to start to add some paint on the cork for now then ballast the tracks. I have 2 mainline track and 2 tracks that go to and from the helix and/or freight yard. I will have a black ballast in the freight yards and sidings... I do model 90's to current, if that matters...Suggestions welcome!!

autocad for structure drawings

Q. for Don Handley: When I retired in '98 I was using AutoCAD release 14. What version are you using now? I would sure use AC for compressing or scaling down structure drawings. What a great help that would be! John Colley, Sonoma, CA

Dried / Cracked mud effect

Hey guy’s

I was watching a YouTube video recently from a guy who paints “wargaming” figures and he painted one of the bases with a paint that when dried up looked like cracked mud! I instantly thought about using that on the model railroad so I went out got some of that paint and started experimenting.

I think the results speak for them self!
