Track and electrical/DCC

Help with wiring my lower staging with DCC...

Again this info that I am getting has been great. Here is another question...

I am wiring my lower staging so that the mainline has power the whole time.

But the staging tracks will be powered only when I am moving a train out to the
mainline...

1) Should there be only one line of power to the track, and use jumpers around
the rail joiners?

2) Or should there be small individual bus lines to the feeders of each track.

I think the former would be the easiest, but what do you think?

Handlaid Curved Turnout Frustration

OK, I've been following the "modified Tony Koester method" for handlaying turnouts for a couple years now.  For me, this means pre-laying the ties on roadbed, with PC ties replacing wood ties at strategic points, i.e.

TCS Decoders, BEMF and lack of trim

Some one raised the issue of how some of TCS decoders didn't currently have trim built in and how if this feature was available it would compensate for the BEMF which folks said would cause loco's to have problems in consists.  I was concerned about this since I've been orderingTCS T1's and T4X's decoders for my tunnel motors which will naturally be run in consists.  Is it true that if you program them to shut down BEMF above speed step 10, BEMF will help Athearns start up smoothly but then run well together with other loco's once above crawl speed?

Fast Tracks and Homabed/Homasote

Ok, so maybe I am doing something wrong here...  I've built a few #6 FT turnouts, and they work beautifully when I hold them in the air.  There is no binding and the points throw with ease.  When I spike them to the homabed or homasote and hook them up to my Tortoise (.32 throw wire), the points stick in both directions.  I know that the Tort is positioned correctly because I have a jig that I put together.

Has anyone else run in to this problem?  If so, what did you do to correct it?

Thanks,

Ryan

On3 and DCC Power Requirements

I've always thought I wanted to model the Steam-Diesel transition era in HO. I grew up in Montana watching the GN,  NP, and MILW slogging heavy freights across the grassland prairies and then up over steep narrow mountian passes. I never really got anything off the ground due to lack of space. I considered N scale, but the older I get, the harder it is to see the details at tha scale. Even HO is getting hard to enjoy.

Program Track - Dumb Question

Working on my on an area of my layout that is in a hidden area with the workshop. In addition to the other "regular track" in the shop area, I wanted to add a spur for a programming track. My initial design calls for use of a turnout from the main to the P. track. For a number of reasons this connection (turnout) would be cumbersome and I am realy not happy with what I have come up with so far. Then it occured to me that I really don't need to connect the two. I mean, all of the track is hidden anyway.

Gyralights and TCS decoders on Athearn RTR SD units

Based on recommendations by Joe Fugate, I obtained some TCS T4X decoders to install via 9-pin plug on my Athearn SD40T-2's, SD45's and SD45T-2's.  Actually Joe recommended the T1 decoders as economical decoders to give smooth operation and realistic gyralight effects.  The T1 and T4X are apparently the same except the number of channels for controlling separate lights or effects etc.

Decoder install: Athearn RTR SD45 & SD40T-2

I have never installed a decoder in any of the new Athearn HO RTR SD45's or SD40T-2's.  Does anyone have any pictures or descriptions of the install?

I have some bare TCS T4X - 9 pin header plug is all, no harness type.  My guess is with the SD45 the shell comes off and the decoder simply plugs in.  The SD40T-2, can you do this by removing the DB blister or is it best to take the shell off?

Thanks!

With Lichfield Station comming to an end anyone hear anything about their website & DCC University and JMRI ?

I believe JMRI is more than just linchfield Station But not sure where it will go Anybody Know anything?

Trackwork: Better options?

Let's face it, our current commercial track selection is pretty poor. Atlas and Walthers track lack the fine spike and tie plate detail that I am looking for, plus, the rail profile for both track types are complete wrong. Peco's Code 83 track system is much better than the previous two. The rail profile is very fine, and close to the prototype. Also, the flextrack exhibits decent spike and tie plate detail. The turnouts are also very nicely detail, however, at almost $40 a piece, they are cost prohibitive for all but the wealthiest modelers.
