Benchwork and roadbed

I have a few,(3) 36 in. x 96 in. lengths of 1/4 inch cork.

I have some 1/4 inch cork rolls, about 10' long. Is there a way to make a little fixture, or is there one available, so as to cut the 45 degree sides? Just wondering. I am sure I can cut them into strips, and they are a bit too high scale wise, but, It would save me some money...

Thanks in advance!!

Track roadbed width. How wide?

I am about to cut my plywood table top into a cookie cutter design. How wide should the track roadbed be?  I have seen pictures ranging from (by my guestimate) three inches down to 1 3/8 inches.  In some places two tracks will be very close to each other but at different heights.  Included picture is for illustrative purposes and is not my plan.

Low Profile Shelf Layout Benchwork

Almost a year ago now, I became interested in model railroading again after a 40 year hiatus. I had semi-grandiose plans for a 13'x15' around the walls layout with a peninsula, but that would have involved completely rearranging my basement (swapping my woodworking and electronics/watchmaking workshops). I eventually decided on as smaller layout along one wall of the latter to start with to see if I'll actually stick with it.

Nailing hardboard backdrops and Fascia in place?

Hello all,

I'm curious to know whether anyone had any experience with nailing their masonite hardboard backdrops and front fascia in place with something like a nailgun?  I'm thinking of using 1/8 hardboard and the idea of using nails secured with a nail gun is appealing as it would be a real time saver and would offer a nice, finished look. Im curious though if the hardboard would hold the nail or if it would just fire right through. Also curious how well it would hold around rounded corners.

Any thoughts?

TOMA track connections

My planing on a 10 x 17 foot layout is in final revisions. My question is how track connections are made across TOMA joints, especially where the layout is between concrete walls at the bottom of a "U". I would imagine using rail joiners requires some room to slide sections together, leaving in this case a half inch gap between the sections and the walls. This may not be a bad thing if scenery hides the gap. Can track (in this case all hand laid) just butt without joiners and TOMA edges, or is that a recipe for disaster?

Fascia color

My Beer Line layout construction is plugging along on the lower level to the point that all the track is down, wired and we're running trains to trouble shoot everything before I start moving up to the next level.  My next task is turnout control, but that means I need to get the fascia installed.  That in itself isnt a big deal but I'm struggling on colors.  So my question to everyone is what color?  (yes Ive spent countless lunches googling "fascia colors" already, I'm just more lost!  LOL  )

MDF spline?

Being a retired woodworker I've used a lot of MDF. Has anyone used it instead of hardboard for making spline?

First time - all the way around the layout!

Woo-hoo!  I finally got all the turnout motors working, and ran a train through every part of the layout.

This is the Norwottuck RR, an L shaped switching layout, a creative interpretation of the Central New England in Mass. The panorama view flattens everything, the blue cross-hatch in the middle is actually a right-angle turn.

KY&N: Setting the Benchmark! (Or at least the height)

Pending the sale of our old house, I am getting close to starting benchwork construction. First, new electrical in basement needs finished, then new lighting.

Question about Drawer Glides

I need some roller bearing drawer glides for something in my train room and I have a question:

Drawing of ball bearing drawer glide

When purchasing a 24" drawer glide, does the 24" refer to measurement A (the amount it extends), B (the minimum collapsed length), or C (the total max length when fully extended)?
