Hand made Aluminum tracks for garden HO Scale layout
Hi all,
I am new to the forum posting. However I have enjoyed MRH PDFs since long.
I have this plan of hand making aluminum tracks for HO scale garden layout.
I know HO is not for gardens but I want to try it.
Why aluminum-three reasons:
1) Aluminum conducts even if its coated with aluminum oxide
2) Aluminum is resistant to elements

Sketchup trick for small items
If you've ever tried to draw something in Sketchup and wanted to use actual instead of scale dimensions, you'll know that it doesn't like really working with our small subjects. Specifically, I've found that it doesn't allow you to draw a 1mm radius arc, or circles much smaller than that, and it will not properly extrude small objects (like HO 33" wheel treads) around a circle. I've even had trouble making 3/8" diameter spheres.

Track layout questions
I decided to build a shelf layout and have a couple of questions regarding track. I looked at Atlas and Peco as well as Kato Uni-track. Has anyone used the Uni track? It looks pretty solid and is already ballasted. Will I have to solder the joints together or is it ok just as it comes out of the box? I know I'll have to solder with Peco and Atlas.
Any suggestions for the ballast under the track? Woodlands makes some not bad looking stuff and there is always cork.
Reviving My Layout
I had posted in my blog that I had constructed a layout as presented in MRR Magazine many years ago. Due to the recent basement flood, I was forced to clean out the spare room where everything was stored and am now starting to reassemble the layout. Here is what the layout looks like. Overall size is 14ft. x 4ft. Track plan drawn with SCARM.

Helix for a 3 level layout
OK Gang, here is a real head scratcher.
A buddy of mine is moving into a new house and his lady has said he can have the entire basement as long as she can get to the laundry room. :)
He has a 15' x 25' room and a side room 5' x 8'. He wishes to have three layers in the main room and a helix in the side room.
His first level (32") we will call the south fork, the second level (56") will be the north fork and the upper level (80") will be staging.
Here comes the problem.

Small N Scale
Hi.
I posted an entry on the the blog, but I should have posted the thing here.

What do you thuink about this latest development?

Virginian with a twist
I am now working on preparing art work for some custom made decals to use on my equipment and will be modeling the Virginian with a twist. There will still be lots of Virginian Equipment present as well as equipment for the other railroads that will become part of the new railroad. I have added a blurb about the concept of my revisionist history.
Changes, changes...
Hi there,
I'm about to make changes (big changes...) in my existing layout and I would like to hear opinions on new track plan.
I want to go from this:
Scale H0
Size of layout: 4 x 4,3 m
Minimum radius of 360 mm (aprox 14")
Turnout radius is 437.5 mm (aprox 17,5 ")
C and K Marklin track
to this:
Level 0
N Scale track plan ideas
Does anyone have or know of any n scale track plans for a 3x12 foot area? I'm looking for a "runner" (not so much switching) with elevation changes. Thanks!

Freight Depot's and House Track's in the early 1950's
Before the day of the Interstate, is it a correct premise to have the railroad would have either a House Track and/or Freight House in every town that at least had a siding. I realize not every single town along the line, but where there were other businesses to serve, the railroad would have a Freight House or House Track to serve the smaller local businesses that didn't have their own siding.
Or I should ask, what were the basic criteria for a railroad to locate a Freight House and/or House Track in a town?
