ICRR Poydras Street Yard - Progress Report
Ok, Sunday and I'm about 30% done with the design of the layout. By mid week if all goes well, I should have some plans to post here. I am designing this first prototype for n scale, and as soon as I get it worked out, will do another for ho scale. After this design frenzy of mine, and I have the 2 plans in front of me and into the computer, ill make my decision on which t9o build.
I just have a lot of concerns about n scale. Although n scale has dcc, for the most part there is little in the way of sound for most engines, and this is due to size limitations. Here is another concern, size. Will these hands that are 56 now be able todeal with its small size later on, or do I just stick to my first love, ho scale.
If I can get past a few issues I'm having about operation, then I have to look at it seriously. Help me out here guys, pro and con on n scale, I really would like your opinions and comments here to help me form a decision.

The details are in HO
I started out in N scale 5 years ago and now I think it looks toyish. I still belong to an N-Trak club, but I'm going HO scale at home. N scale is hard for my fat fumbling fingers and not so great eyesight.
What really got my into HO was the details. The details are in HO scale. I like the grab irons, the MU hoses, the scale couplers, the scale track, the building details.
Another thing that got me was sound. HO is magnitudes better than N scale. Still not great, but much better.

ho scale
Yeah see this is what I'm thinking too and I'm going to finish this n scale plan and publish it here, and just use that as a stepping stone to the ho design. If you are familiar with the area I am modeling one of the focal points of the layout is going to be the falstaff brewery, and its amazing neon and animated sign. Quite simply the sign when in different lighting configurations, gives you the weather for the day, rain or shine, cold or hot, its quite a fixture, and a must have on the layout. This feature in nscale is not out of the question, but much more pratical in ho scale. And sound, I got to have sound, so ho is definately on the menu for me.
I must say though, the n scale version I'm working on is going to be a fun operational layout for whomever would like to try and execute it. Later tonight when I get home I'm going to put up the unfinished layout to give everyone a idea where its going.
To each his own
Gentlemen,
I am happy to respect any scale decision that allows one to achieve one's modeling desires. But as an avid and active N scaler, I am not willing to see what I do trashed as toy-like. Are we nearly as far along as the HO crowd, perhaps not, but just here at MRH you have excellent examples of what can be done in N Scale, and it's highly detailed, runs well, and is, in many cases, on par with anything that the HO modelers can offer. M.C Fujiwara's work certainly stands out in that category here at MRH.
So enjoy your HO layouts - I'll be ecstatic to see Poydras Street done no matter what scale as it's "home" for me. Just don't trash what the rest of us are doing, unless you know what we're really doing.
