Water
I need some advice. While the trackwork is progressing, I need to address the little mountain lake and the port area water.
Being colorblind (wore OD for many, many years) red/green dichromatic, I do see basic colors but want your suggestions on the colors to paint the bottom and sides of the lake and the "water" in the port area of the layout BEFORE I pour the instant water material.
Specifically, the mountain lake is quite small and should be a really nice "blue" (a clear lake high in the mountain) while the port area is basically a "warf" dredged out to receive barges and the railroad ferry. I know about putting in the debris /swimmers/fishermen etc. before pouring, but want to know what to paint and where to paint.
I'm assuming that many of your comments will apply to the small river at the other end of the layout when I get there.
Thanks.

water idea
Hi David-
My personal opinion is that a true "blue" never looks very realistic. Depending on how deep you want the water to appear; deeper=darker. In other words, if your lake is supposed to be 30-40 feet deep, you may want to paint the lake bottom almost black. As you get closer to shore, paint the bottom more of a tan color. As you blend the colors from black to tan, you'll get the appearance of the lake lake becoming more shallow and ultimately--the color should match the color of your dirt groundcover.
When it comes time to pour, you can tint the Envirotex (or whatever product you decide to go with) with some acrylic paint--probably a greenish color.
That's my take on it. Also, you should check out Joe's DVD's. He's got a chapter that deals with coloring water.
