Being Satisfied

After much hemming and hawing I am settled that I've maxed out the potential for this space.  Time to develop an operating scheme that covers the entire layout.  The branch lines outlined are all operable and should provide some interesting switching but the focus here is on the mainline development.

The N/S Connections diagram reviiews the interaction of the two yards. If the two yards are playing a staging role for each other, the traffic entering WRJ from St A would represent traffic coming North on the Conn river line from Brattleboro/points South.  Traffic coming through the loops from WRJ to St A would take the S route at turnout B and represent Canadian National trains.

The other two diagrams combine to make up the long loop from WRJ to St A.  The Helper section presents the Roxbury Grade crossing of the Green Mountains and runs from Montpelier Jct to Braintree.  There is a 8 1/2 foot passing sideing at the top of the grade in Roxbury.

Intend to do the  Dick Elway system of staging whole trains.

Been a while....hope I entered the diagrams correctly.

Have you drawn the space out

Have you drawn the space out to scale to make sure everything will fit (especially curves at specified minimum radius)?

This is a diagram of what is already built and I am now working on writting up operations schemes for individual trains and the layout as a whole.

Thanks

Thanks for the above comment on making sure everything fits.  While this is extremely valid input it's about as far from how I got to this point as possible....and not entirely on purpose.  I see it as an art project but have also made year after year of changes representing multipe rr's in NE...with a heavy dose of impulsive decision making.  See a photo or visit a site and it's "hey I could do that".  That said....everything on the layout is approximate with the exception of all the holes in the walls.  I run small diesels but guys ran the Super Chief last session and we've had articulateds make it arround as well....Davod S we miss you big.

I am at the stage of assigning power to different sections of the layout.  The section running through the loops from White River Junction (exit right) to St Albans connects the two yards both as destinations and as staging.  A train exiting WRJ to the right could have CN power on it for purposes of being a southbound train out of Canada...which would enter St Albans directly at switch B versus travelling through the reversing section first.  Given the connectioin of the two loops I can have a crew work CV and B&M and CN.  Given that the left end of WRJ is split by the Station a train can also exit to the rear of the building...infering the Conn River line.

I am finding our group is getting into some running of structured jobs.  Much optimism at the moment.

Thanks

So...for the last couple of sessions on the railroad I've been able to set up trains for switching duties that guys have enjoyed.  This would seem like a sefl reinforcing process for these next things to do.  One of the fellows in the group is developing a pocket sized train listing form that might be useful on both layouts.  I've just hand written out step by step duties not trying to approximate railroad speak.

The branch line to the garage is getting operational.  Need to develop the train movements to and from the branch.

I'm setting up a different type of train for the next time around.  I have old Life Like FA units pretending to be F3's that are dc but pull like anything and are as reliable as things get.  One unit can pull 20 cars out of Laundryville/Bethel to the grade running through Camp David section.  There will need to be a rear end helper stationed in Laudryville.  The other side of the grade would bea crew change at Montpelier Jct/Cookieville.  If that type of activity draws interest the helper could legitimately stay on to a crew change in Georgia.  And a third crew down the hill to St Albans.

I will need to test run this train and cull out any cars not ready for the trip.
