Before and after

Finally, I am about to do room prep on the layout room. The rest of the basement is about done.

Still have to clean up the weight room and install a sink and paintbooth near the door. Water is already there for the outside fawcet so it should be fairly easy. Just have to teach myself to solder copper pipes. Those keep moving higher on the priority list.

The layout room is about to get all the holes and cracks filled floor, walls and ceiling. Also I am going to take down about 8 feet of wall separating the existing train room and the main room. In the end the layout room will be 13.5 by 43 ft.

With all that space you would think the track plan would be easy but so far it has been challenging.

So some before and after photo's. A lot of prep work has been cleaning and getting rid of stuff. A few truckloads have been hauled out.

And finally the south end which shows the wall which will be removed including the door and possibly the stub wall or at least shorten it.

The weight room is next. Then I can build a sink cabinet where the dumb bells are and build my paint booth next to it.

I also took some panoramic pics so as the benchwork progresses I can show what it looks like at different stages. As you can see a long section of the layout room is open. I am designing the plan with 3 feet between the posts and the benchwork just in case I want to put in a wall. More than likely I will put in some kind of room divider curtains. In the meantime, I will hang plastic once construction starts to keep the dust isolated from the rest of the house.

This whole post is as much for my own records as anything else but maybe it will be more interesting to others as more changes and construction is accomplished.

Here's an idea

Clear the floor, buy some gift wrapping paper (on the roll), tape it together for the size of what will be the surface of your layout. lay it out on the floor, then draw on the back side of the paper until you find something that'll work. Your space is only a little bit bigger than mine, (10' W x 30' L). You might want a bit more space. It all depends on which scale you plan on building in, as well.

Good Luck. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Stevie I think that is a nice

Stevie I think that is a nice concept the before and after, so I will share one from my club. We are adding on a workshop, additional bathrooms, hot water heater to our club. This space was mostly abandoned by the city we rent from and full of old crap that someone thought needed to be saved at the time. A lot of that stuff was never needed so we cleaned it out and began remodeling the area.

Here is a photo, or two shortly after we acquired the space. We have hauled out about two pick up truck loads of crap and replaced some of it with some of our crap. Most of the lights are not functional and there is a huge amount of duct work and a massive air handler in the ceiling, all of which will be removed and in some instances replaced.

Now after some on again and off again work we have moved to this stage.

New lights, wiring, paint, wall patching, lots of stuff behind the new ceiling tiles gone, insulation added, plumbing in both the ceiling and concrete floor tended to.

As can be seen in the above photos lots of work has been done. There is still more to come in the way of work. Right now a couple of can lights will be installed, a pair of extra floor drains added, a water heater, a second bathroom with 2 toilets and sink will be put in service (much of which is already to go with the exception of the enclosure). The one open area of wall will get some attention and some rotted wood will be replaced. The wall will be reinforced and enclosed. The end is near!

The reality

The reality of remodeling and cleaning/painting is most of us will put that stuff off. Unless it involves the model railroad. It took me 22 years to paint the bottom of the stairwell and trim the doors down there. For a long time it was good enough for a basement. Now, since its a railroad lounge and a model railroad layout room, it gets all my attention.
