I am working on a similar project but plan to use a drawbar. The shorting issues between frames is solved by swapping the trucks end for end on the calf or cow so the frames are the same polarity. I will use a metal drawbar and wire connection to avoid any contact issues. So far I have the cow running with a NWSL motor and the oringinal flywheels tuned to be well balanced. I am using an NCE d13 decoder. The fuel tank is now filled with lead and the motor is foam taped in place. I added 1/8 inch lead weight to the underside of the hood as well. It runs very well.
