Custom detail parts - best use yet for Shapeways

As many of you know, I've been experimenting with 3D printing through Shapeways, trying to learn what is possible and what is practical.  While I've tried (and mostly succeeded with) a variety of models and parts of models, I am thinking that one of the best applications is the ability to create inexpensive detail parts, especially in HO scale.  Not only can I create parts for less than the cost of the same part on the shelf, but I can create custom versions with relative ease.  Take this, for example:

Lance Mindheim site is down?

Just down for a small thing or long term?  Keep getting a 404 error all day, anyone know what's up?   Lance I read your blog every Sunday and hope it's just a quirk

Nice webcam--steamtown

I just found a webcam for the Steamtown roundhouse and thought I'd share.  Is there a list of good railroad webcams anywhere?

I suspect that this one will be much more interesting in a few months...

(There's also links to cameras all over the place, not train related.)

Athearn SD40-2 Locomotive Problems

I model the Kansas City Southern in the early 80s.  During this period over 1/3 of the railroad's locomotives were SD40-2 (white paint).  Although the primary railroad on my layout is the KSC, I don't have many KCS locomotives on the layout.  Last year my wife gave me three of the new Athearn SD40-2 in white paint for my birthday.  They have been on the work bench for over a year waiting for DCC decoders to be installed. (They are DCC ready, however I was looking for a sound decoder.)

A big thank you !

I wanted to express my thanks to everyone here.
I just re-entered this hobby after 30+ years and with so much to learn, I read as much as I can to attempt to absorb the amazing and widely varied areas, especially technological, that have emerged in this hobby.  I have found that MRH has been a treasure trove of learning opportunities.  I have gladly sifted through some of the tangential and esoteric disagreements and strings of bickering on some posts, to pan for the useful and valuable information you all have to offer.

What happened to Railflyer Model prototypes?

Hi all.

Does anyone know what's going on  with Railflyer Model prototypes? Last I knew, they were in danger of bankruptcy, but there's no new information. Are they still in business?

Thanks,

CFNR 501

Photo Bloopers

OK, any of us who photograph our models have had them...photos that didn't turn out quite as planned. Well, guess what, nobody's perfect! In the spirit of the "duh-oh" moments that we all experience in life, here's a place for those funny bloopers of model railroad photos.

I will kick off with one I took today I like to call "The Hand of God":

Fine Scale Model Railroader Expo in Scranton - Who's going?

I see that MRH will be there as will be TMTV - I have spoken to Joe and Barry on the phone, but have never met in person. Will you be there Joe and Barry? We will be there (Trackside Scenery), with our Spruce layout and although we have never been to this particular event, we are really looking forward to it.

Just curious to see if any of the MRH forum folks will be there.....

For those that need info on this event, see http://www.modelrailroadexpo.com

Supporting small vendors in spite of themselves

I have always been willing to spend a little more to buy products from those small operations. Their products are usually unique, and they help avoid the Walthers lookalike syndrome.

Since last December I have placed orders with 4 different vendors.  Two are MRH advertisers, 2 are not. The value of each of these orders ranged from a low of $106 to a high of $149. I do not consider these amounts chump change. I paid for all off these orders by credit card.  Every order was charged upon receipt. Here’s my experience:

Best way to circulate air from baseboard heat in basement

I have a 28'x29' space (82" ceiling height) in the basement where the interim P&A is located.  I should have more than adequate heating for the space (over 10,000 watts) and yet there are several pockets of area where it is still fairly cold.  So I need to figure a way to QUIETLY circulate the air.  Floor fans are really not a solution I am looking to have.  First they are noisy.  Second, they would clutter up the already (what I consider) narrow aisles. Third, they can become a tripping hazard.
