"Recycling" Trains during same Operating Session

As I attempt to literally squeeze a layout into the available space for an interim P&A Layout, I am faced with the dilema of only having 8 tracks of Staging for each direction, totallying 16 trains during one operating session.  Because of the short run, the lack of any classification yard because of no space for one, I am certain this will not be sufficient to keep 4-6 road crews busy for a three hour operating session.  Therefore, I am thinking of resorting to "recycling" trains during an operating session.  Since each staging yard wil

Fast "Watches"

Has any modified pocket watches into Fast Clocks?  I am modling the early 1950s and would like the train crews to have their own pocket watches to keep track of time, since I am using TT&TO and would like either a 4:1 or 3:1 Fast Clock.

Thanks for any ideas.

HO track help

I have an N scale display and I was given an HO scale train set. I would like to expand and add the HO to my display but when I try to run the train it goes maybe a foot then stops. this happens whether in forward or reverse. I've cleaned the tracks and the wheels and it has the plastic insulated joiners. It's an old set so I'm not sure what to do with it. The engine is a bachmann santa fe 307. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks.

Basic beginner ops

Hi all,

There's a prototype for it

I pass these photos along just to show that there's a prototype for the performance of my first trackwork way back when.

6/24/10 - UP's LOFxx was shoving a string of empties, when a boxcar picked the points of a yard track switch.  So, the west truck took track 3 and the east truck took track 2.

Layout Analysis and the yard lead

How would you list the yard lead in the Layout Analysis - connecting track?  Storage track? passing track?

TIA

Operations Poll

This is a quick poll to see how people operate their layouts.

the question is this; when you operate do you start your session with everything staged or have you developed your plan well enough to allow you to finish a session and pick up exactly where you left off?

the reason I ask this is I am about to start operating (april 24th) and I am thinking of starting this railroad on one specific day and then just keep moving the calendar forward. I guess something similar to what Joe is doing on his own layout.

Kato-digitrax decoder

Hi all, Has anyone ever installed Kato Digitrax FL12 Decoder? I have been following the instructions which came with a Superline Passenger Car to do so with no luck. The lights work before I put the chip in, but dont once the chips in, take it out again and they work. Therer are no instructions with the decoder. I have contacted Digitrax who told me to contact Kato , unfortunately they do not respond to emails. Can anyone advise me?

Battery Power

Hello All

I am considering taking up Model Railroading and have spent the last month or so studying this and other web sites to learn as much as I can before I commit myself to any purchases.

After reading articles and watching videos on wiring layouts something dawned on me. Why aren't there more battery powered locos being made? (All I have seen are G scale or childrens toys) It would seem to me that battery powered locos with wireless DCC would make life a lot easier. Electrical shorts would be a thing of the past and building a layout would be much less complicated.
