Scenery and structures

Scenery

Having read your recent articles on scenery,  I would suggest use use ordinary screen wire to form hills and valleys. I use coat-hanger wire to create the top contour; fasten the screen wire to it with U-shaped bits of wire, and then lay 4" squares of 2-ply paper towels on the screen after dipping in soupy Hydrocal B-11. (This dries to a harder surface than plaster, but takes acrylic colors just as well).  Rock molds filled with thicker Hydrocal are applied to the towels-on-screen-wire, after spraying dried towels to assure adhesion.

Finally! I´ve learned to like engraving :)

Hi! :)

For most of my layouts I´ve been either buying ready-made walls and platforms, or been engraving in plaster on a wooden plate. Now however, I´ve gone over to making all engraving in Styrofoam, finishing with a layer of plaster and then Acrylic paint.

Picture size

I some what successfully made my first post with pictures, (My wife will not let me buy any more puzzles) thanks to those who read it. I have a question, does the picture insert platform automatically resize them, something popped up but was gone before I read it. The image I had loaded was in a little box which only showed part of the picture, so I kept making it smaller until I could see it all. Viewing it now the pictures are small. So I guess the programme resizes them to the right size, correct?

My wife will not let me buy any more puzzles

As I finished The Silver Bell puzzle, by Ted Blaylock I started to think, this would make a great scene on a model railroad.  That's when the trouble started.

Weathering questions

I'm getting ready to weather a boxcar, my first try at weathering.  I'll be using pan pastels.  It's a shake-together Bowser boxcar I bought for a couple of bucks at a train show.

1. After completing the kit, I'll soak the car in a water bath with dish soap to remove skin oils, etc.  The car came decaled.  Should I use a toothbrush to gently scrub the car after taking it out of the bath or just rise it off and let it air dry?

Bridge Support Question

Does anyone know what the railroads typically used to lay the actual bridge floor beams on top of the stone pier with? Steel H beam of some sort? I'm getting ready to install my thru plate girder and truss bridges to the creek that I modeled and as I looked at my prototype photo, realized that the underside of the bridge deck actually rests on something.

Modeling corrguated fiberglass sheets

I have working on a few structures for my Madras Switching module and I noticed that both of them had a similar element, fiberglass panels. I did a little research and discovered that Fiberglass had been around since the 1930's and was used in commercial products starting in the 1940's. I cannot find a specific date of when Corrugated Fiberglass sheets began to be used in construction, but I would think sometime post was to mid 50's? Since I model 1968 I figured I would be safe modeling these unique panels on my structures.

What's on your workbench? (2016Feb edition)

Didn't see a new topic for February yet, so here goes...

Weathering a concrete elevator

I'm working on a Walther's ADM elevator kit. A ran across an old blog from 2008 that discussed weathering a concrete elevator:

Water alternative and storage

Hi all,

I'm not a hardcore modeler, but do put up a seasonal layout each year.  I've been thinking of covering some layout real estate with a large pond/small lake.  I'm going to use foil and place the water material over the top.

I've read on several sites that some use light corn syrup with food coloring for their water material.  I've mocked up a very small test and it looks promising.  It actually looks really good.
