MEK
Sat, 2011-04-30 15:46 — FKD
Viewing Joe Fugates Scenery and Bridges DVD he speaks of a product called M.E.K. which I understood was available in hardware stores. Well not in these parts - went to three hardware stores today no one had heard of it. Is it sold under a different name in Canada? I have a few more stops in my search, later in the month I'll be in the city and can check in the big box hardware stores.

No luck yet
No luck yet in finding MEK in my area here on Vancouver Island either.

On the Island...
I'm not surprised Roy.
You have to think, painting contractors and their suppliers rather than the big box or hardware stores, that seem to be the outlet for MEK in the US.
I wish there was a way to easily ship a small quantity of MEK with-in Canada without it costing more than this Gallon of MEK cost me in the first place! I'd be happy to share my jug around, so to speak but shipping would be prohibitive, (if allowed) I'm sure.

Success - sort of
I can get it by the gallon for $48.50, and they have only a few of the gallon containers left I was warned, it is usually sold by the 5 gallon pail.
Now that will be a few life times.
Located it at a paint supply company. So it does not appear to be legally restricted but is not at all common.

YIKES!
Ouch! I think they are marking that up a bit. I paid $19 plus tax per gallon in Regina...around January this year.

I'll say again...
Try looking at auto body supply stores. I know they exist in Canada. Even the chain stores of NAPA often have an extensive solvent selection if they cater to auto body shops. Any auto parts store that has a DuPont, PPG, BASF, or AkzoNobel sign on the building is a body shop supplier.
Google "auto body supply <city> Canada". You'll get something like this. Call them.
Alternately, try lacquer thinner. Ready available anywhere, low cost. There are no rules governing what can be labeled as lacquer thinner but almost always contain a relatively high percentage of MEK. At least 20% maybe up to 60% depending on blend. Read the MSDS to find out what percentage of MEK is in the formula. MAK (methyl amyl ketone) for all intents and purposes will work the same in hobby work as MEK.

MEK
At that price, I'd go without. Still haven't hit the automotive stores , but no paint supplier in town carries it on the shelf, or at least in public view and won't ackknowledge that they do carry it if in the back room.

So true, Roy
I could get a lot of tenax for $48 and probably would be hard pressed to use it up, but could buy it $10 at a time. I will check around Saskatoon, though, and see if I can find it anywhere.

This is bugging me now...
Out of curiosity I called General Paint in Saskatoon. They have MEK in a gallon size, but the retail price is $43.95!
Finding this hard to believe I called General Paint in Regina, where I purchased my MEK earlier this year for $19 a gallon. Regina's price is $36.99/gallon retail.
I'm beginning to think I got the contractor price on my gallon. That or MEK has become quite dear since then.

Called Paint Supplies in Edmonton
General Paints has MEK at $26 per gallon - no quarts. Seems the price is as volitile as the product. Cloverdale paints does have it by the quart at $18.95. Sounds like it would pay to call around to find out where it is and how much. Although it would be tempting to get a four fold increase for an extra $8 would I ever use more than a quart of the stuff? And does it keep? I'm in the city next week will let you know if I get some. Anyone wanna share a gallon?
