Layout #7
Wed, 2011-03-23 11:55 — dfandrews
At last, the bedroom becomes the train room. (The last "room" I had for trains was a 6'x10' space in the corner of my folks garage 50 years ago). So, I'm going to document bits and pieces of my progress in constructing layout #7, in a nice, comfortable conditioned 10' x 12' room. More entries follow this intro.

The corner
Benny,
Actually, the footprints are from the previous owner of the masonite. (Remember, I try to use everything made available to me, 'cause it fits my budget!!).
I just pushed in the middle of the curve with my shoulder, screwed the left side bottom to top with my handy-dandy cordless impact/screw gun (best tool on the planet) and then worked my way to the right, fastening top and bottom as I went.
I found that I did not need all those uprights, so when I did the left side of the room corner I just used five: one at every 22.5 degrees (90°, 45° and then in between). And that corner was at a 10 inch radius. I test fit it, then soaked the back with the first spray I could find in the garage, and that happened to be windex and water. Waited 20 minutes, then it went right up. SO, 10 inch radius, presoaked 1/8" masonite, worked great.

Free Workbench
Dan,
Can you use a workbench/cabinet in your train room? I have one available that is looking for a good home. The price is right (free) and I live in Ventura. I'm thinking you can keep tools and stuff in there temporarily and when you don't need it anymore, you can dispose of it or pass it on to another layout builder.

Workbench
Tom,
Thanks for the offer. I already have the workbench installed (see one of the original photos in this blog post). And a neighbor was getting rid of a stereo cabinet: fits under the benchwork neat as can be, and has tools and electrical stuff stored in it.
Great to hear from another Ventura County railroad model hobbyist.
