34 || Lack of Progress Update || On My Digitrax DT602D Throttle Firmware Update

At the end of my last video, it was my understanding that I had two options. I could send my throttle back to Digitrax, or I could get a Digitrax PR4 and update the firmware myself.

I opted for the PR4 as it would be good to have a USB to LocoNet interface for using with JMRI and I am sure this is not the last firmware update I would need to make to this throttle.

You could drop it all after 4.36 on.... 8 minutes of bloopers is absolutely pointless.

I found it amusing  that you credit the Groups.io\Digitrax  support group for that Digitrax Firmware update document. I had provided that information to you  in your previous  DT-602 thread.   Guess I wasted my time

But that this update process would not work with the combination PR4 and Digikeijs Command Station (which is providing Loconet Termination and RAILSYNC ) is surprising and denotes/demonstrates some incompatibility or a setup issue with the Digikeijs system versus Loconet.

That or you managed to brick your  DT-602 beyond normal recovery steps.  I have bricked my DT402 a few times experimenting but always managed to recover it.

= = = = =

There is a major difference between the PR3 and PR4.  The PR3 supported a Standalone Loconet implementation that has been removed from the PR4.  I have updated firmware on DT402 throttles simply using my PR3 and no Command Station many times by simply activating Loconet Termination on the PR3.

Unfortunately this is not possible with the PR4 without adding more hardware like the RRCIRKITS   gateway to provide RAILSYNC power and termination or adding a Command Station to Loconet.  Strange the Digikeijs did not.

Your firmware update was prone to fail as the DT-602 in your video does not come active even while plugged into the active Digikeijs powered Loconet.  It should have had an 'active' display.

Marc, I apologize for not

Marc,

I apologize for not mentioning you, I did not mean to make you feel like you were wasting your time. The KB1063 document is the one that I screenshot in the first video, episode 30. The document that I found more helpful was the Firmware Update Document for the PR3 that provided screenshots of all the steps. This is the document that I screen shot in this video. Once again, I apologize.

I think the mode you are referring to is called the MS-100 termination mode or something like that.  I would be curious to know why they would remove that feature from the PR-4, especially if it makes it easier to do firmware updates. Needing to connect a command station is ridiculous in my mind, but I am sure Digitrax has their reasons.

Ryan at Iron Planet Hobbies was very helpful in doing some tests as he has similar equipment available.  He was able to update a DT602 (non-duplex) with the PR4 and DR5000, but he bricked his DT602D (duplex version) with the same setup and could not recover it.  I am going to try one more time tomorrow, connecting to the LocoNet B instead of the LocoNet T, but I think I will have to send my throttle back next week.

According to Digitrax Help Desk, even though the DT602 does not show that it is active, it can supposedly still be recovered by just running the update a few times.  Digittrax claims that they have tested this scenario and have always been able to recover a throttle.

As for the length of my video, there are reasons why I did it that have a lot to do with how YouTube algorithms work. But that is also why I clearly marked where the outro was using video chapters and also clearly mark that the end is just bloopers via on screen text. I am assuming that the majority of the people will stop the video after the outro, if they even watch that far. The analytics show that most people only watch a few minutes of each video anyway.

I really appreciate that you have been watching my videos and following along on my journey. I just got back into MRR in December of 2019 after not really doing anything since 1988. So everything is very different, including the amount of available information.

I hope I can provide enough interesting content that you will consider still watching my videos and I look forward to further dialogue with you.

Thanks, Heath

P.S., I do not know if you have noticed, but I took the advice I got on episode 30 and have been adding music in a very different way to my videos.

DT602D Updating

Hello,

I am wondering if the PR3 can be used to do thies "Firmware" updates on the DT602 and DT602D or is a PR4 required?

I would rather not have to buy extra hardware if I don't need it as i already own a PR3.

Thanks

. . .

Yes you can apply the updates via the Digitrax PR3.

The beauty with the PR3 is that it supports a Standalone Loconet mode and can do the update without the need for a Command Station in the loop ( to terminate Loconet ).

The PR4 does not support this  Standalone Loconet mode.  They removed it.
