Ghost River Railway

Geared's picture

Hello all.

This is my first video of the layout that I am building. I figured that this would be easier than trying to make a track plan at this stage. Just to many other things to do at the moment. Still lots of work to do on all aspects of the layout, but things are moving along. The track plan leaves a lot to be desired, but it's about all I can do in the space I have available. My real world interchange/parent company is Canadian Pacific. Only one small extension to add on and then benchwork will be complete.I hope I don't bore you.

Though there is a loop, I only use it to let a train run from one yard to another when I'm either working a train up the logging branch or when working a yard engine. I operate point to point. Right now I'm just practicing movement of cars to see what the sequence will be.  Soved a few problems by doing so. Aside from the loop which will run six to eight car trains, all logging branch trains will be three car trains and a bobber caboose. Heislers and Shays will work the branch.

Hope you enjoy. Any feedback will be thankfully received and faithfully applied if possible.

Changed your post to embed the Youtube video

Roy:

You can actually embed the Youtube video right into your post - just click the button that looks like a film strip and paste your Youtube URL right into the dialog box that comes up and voila! Your video is right there in your post directly.

I edited your post to do just that to show you how nice it works.

Many thanks

Thank you, Joe. I learn something new every day and today is no exception.

Layout Schematic

Here's a schematic of Ghost River Rwy that I'm going to use for my turnout control panel. I am going to put the panel in a drawer that I'll build under the layout in the center of the oval below the mainline bridge area. I forget who did this in Europe on an On3 switching layout, highlighted on AMR, but his cabinet drawer was my inspiration for the idea. Would like to give him credit if I can find out who it was. (Will do more searching later tonight.) I know I can control the turnouts from my DCC throttle, but it's such a small room that the panel is always within arms reach, unless I'm in one of two access holes at each end of the continuous loop. I know the layout isn't perfect, but it seems to be working for me, once I get two more turnouts in and my panel wired. The room is roughly 7' x 10' and opposite to what is shown in the scehmatic. Don't want the panel sticking out any further than necessary.

Only two possible extensions remain. The door to the room is around the corner from Camp 2, a small L. I may remove the door and extend the CP staging another three feet and add a fourth track at the same time and wrap Camp 2's track around the L, just to make the logg loading area a little longer. Will also be putting a runaround in this area if and when I extend the tracks. This area is going to be a highline logging show. Also, only turnouts that cannot be reached comfortably, or safely, are being powered. All others are manual control with Caboose Industries ground throws. I use Peco turnouts, so I may put dummy switch stands in some of them to add a little more realism and just switch the turnouts with my uncoupling skewer. Time wil tell.

Grrrr! Picture isn't showing. Will try to figure out why.

Finally got it.

Back to the Grind

Well, my visit with the kidlets is over and it's time to work on the honeydo list and get my hobby shop purchases sorted out. Lots of rolling stock to prepare and engines to work on. Heck, lots of everything to do, but that's just the fun part of the hobby, variety.

Excellent work Roy, nice Video!!

You have alot of Railroading going on in a small space but, it looks to be perfect for a 1 man operation. I love those 6% grades and if your engines have sound I'd love to see a video and hear them working the grades pushing and pulling cars up and down to the lumber camps when you get them finished. Keep up the work and let us see some operation when you get some.

Will do.

For sure, Dan. Still lots to do.  Right now it's rotation between getting more rolling stock built, rebuilding engines, or installing decoders, along with short scenery attempts. Add to that all of the other miscellaneous stuff needed and I keep busy. And I haven't even started to detail or paint my diesel fleet.

I do have Spectrum three truck Shay with sound. Once I get some better lighting I'll be making another video, I hope.

Thanks for checking in.
