Grain elevator diorama
Sat, 2013-11-02 10:18 — MAGX
After lurking and marvelling at the fantastic modeling shown here for quite a while, I think it is only fair to contribute a little myself.
A grain elevator will be the signature structure of my next switching layout, but I will not start building it soon. So I decided to put the elevator on a diorama until then. The prototype of the elevator I am scratchbuilding is from Eyota, MN. I do not try to match it 100%, close is good enough for me. I have been working on it for a week now and it still is a work in progress, but this project has evolved enough now to show some pics.

This is AWESOME!!!!!! Very well done. They don't have elevators of this style in Indiana. I'd love to build one.

That is an spectacular job you have done, Kurt. And to have Tom Johnson comment, too!
Reading through this thread has given me some ideas for the several elevators I need to build. I'm glad this link popped up in my email, since this was started back in 2013.

Thank you guys!
Though I have scratchbuilt a lot of structures over the years, this elevator is still my favorite structure. It is funny that Jack dug out this old thread right now. A few weeks ago I started to build a new HO switching layout and I intended to build a modern industrial park. But after I had laid track and I could have started on scenery and structures, I had some doubts if an industrial park was what I really wanted. So I put the grain elevator on the layout and saw that it would perfectly if I removed just one spur. Since I had built the elevator I had wanted to use it as the signature structure of a layout, so that is what I am going to do now. I would be delighted if the scene would turn out only half as nice as Tom’s (INRAIL) fantastic layout.
I want o add a few more grain bins to make the elevator complex look more impressive. Today I scratchbuilt the first one, two more to go.

Nice work Kurt!
Hi Kurt!
Waow! Your elevator looks very good.
As you, I'm hooked by Tom's layout.
Glad to hear you've began a new layout. I stay tuned!
