Grain elevator diorama
Sat, 2013-11-02 10:18 — MAGX
After lurking and marvelling at the fantastic modeling shown here for quite a while, I think it is only fair to contribute a little myself.
A grain elevator will be the signature structure of my next switching layout, but I will not start building it soon. So I decided to put the elevator on a diorama until then. The prototype of the elevator I am scratchbuilding is from Eyota, MN. I do not try to match it 100%, close is good enough for me. I have been working on it for a week now and it still is a work in progress, but this project has evolved enough now to show some pics.

Great!!
Kurt, it looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Work!!
The detail is really nice.
Question, how did you make the top of the lift elevator and how did you make to tubes to bent to the angles? Or were the grain would go to the different points
Thanks
Elevator head
The elevator heads are put together from 4 pieces of 1/16 styrene, as you can see in this pic (when you take a close look at the top of the heads).
I made this drawing …
… printed it out and glued it to a piece of 1/16" styrene using non-permanent spray adhesive. Then I cut the pieces out (cutting a bit outside the lines, especially on the rounded parts) and glued them together. After waiting a few hours for the glue to cure, I sanded the parts until they had the right shape. (If anyone wants to give it a try, I can provide a PDF file of the drawing.)
The grain pipes are made from 1/8" solid styrene rods – you can easily bend these rods.
Corrugated styrene
Could you please say what exact product you used for the corrugated styrene covering?
Thanks.

Corrugated sheets
Thomas, I got the sheets from a vendor here in Germany, so this information will not be very useful to you. Anyway, here is the link: www.architekturbedarf.de/katalog/artikelinfo/9704/ps-wellblech-welle-a-_....
