Radius

Ole Smokey's picture

Hi there, i am working on a new layout plan. I need to know if a 2-8-0 can work a 10.75 radius. That is the biggest i can get on my layout. The plan is a two level model for a logging plan the upper level is for a switchback to the logging camp. I am using Shays for that, but i have a interchange for a regular main track that would go around the sawmill and pick-up the boxcars and drop off or on passengers and or freight. This layout is similar to the Possum valley rr. I started with that and added other terrain and own ideas. its 3X5 and that is about the biggest plan for the rv. I will try and upload the plan but not sure how. I have a good plan i think but would want some feedback, Smokey

Min Radius on O scale 2 Rail should be 72"

I have been involved in O scale Rainroad Design for over 40 years. Layouts over 2000 sq ft, the min Radius should not be less then 72" inside radius with the double track mainline the outside is 3.50" between centerline of track. The trains will pass each other with no problem. It looks more lile Protype Railroading not Toy Trains!! If you are Running Big boys or Hi Cubes or today stuff go a little bigger on the Outside Radius of a Double Track main.
On HO to make look correct I wouldn't go less then 36" Radius, I know a lot of guys talk about 15" Radius, that not bad for a Zoo Train or Park Train.
Happy Railroading PRR DAVE
